A family jaunt to the seaside with everyone from Great Aunt Ethel down to Little Baby Johnny seemed to belong to a quaint bygone era of striped deckchairs, flowery bathing caps and wicker picnic baskets, but 2012 has seen the comeback of the classic family holiday.
Does the return of the big family holiday spell out more fun, or more stress?
Getting the right mix of people is crucial to a holiday. It can make the difference between holiday dream and holiday nightmare.
Holiday dream or disaster?
On the one hand, more people can mean more clashes of opinion, squabbles over whose turn it is to do the washing up and who left the sandy wetsuit in the bath.
On the other hand, a big family getaway can be a fantastic chance to spend some time with family members you don?t get to see that often. Plus it?s often cheaper to split the cost of one large holiday property between an extended family than it is for a smaller group to shoulder the expense.
Your children will have friends and cousins to play with and entertain each other. Being with aunts, uncles and grandparents means you can arrange to share the babysitting, allowing everyone a night off or out on the town.
Shared activities ? days out or gathering around the table for some old-fashioned board games ? are great for family bonding and banter. Just remember to give each other space to do things independently too.
Dining out as a large group can become a large additional holiday expense, however there are ways around this.? With some careful advance planning and preparation, you can save yourself some money and precious holiday time. Make some meals at home and freeze them to bring with you, no one wants to spend their holiday tied to the kitchen sink. Ask other members of the party to do the same. You?ll soon find you have many meals planned. Then you can just sit back and enjoy a great family feast around the table together.
With a bit of forward planning, your big family holiday can be one to remember ? for all the right reasons.
