Artist Hides $12,600 to Lure Visitors

LONDON - Painter Tomas Georgeson has artfully tried to drum up attendance at a London gallery by hiding $12,500 - most of his life savings - among the paintings and other artworks for the taking if anyone can find it.

Georgeson has left the blank check for ?8,000 ($12,600) in the Milton Keynes Gallery.

Georgeson told the Daily Telegraph that he hid the check in the gallery on Tuesday morning and, to get word out, he placed an ad in a newspaper flagging it to peoples' attention. The advert warns that the money "will be collected on 1 March 2013 if unclaimed."

The artist's aim is a creative way to "get people through the door and change the mood of the place." And he's willing to put nearly all his money on the line to do it.

"You can't just implant culture in a city and expect it to thrive," Georgeson says. "It seems it's the time for culture to come to Milton Keynes."

Georgeson did not let the gallery know that he had hidden the money. A representative from the gallery told ABC News, "He did not inform us at all. We got to know about it through a phone call from a Daily Telegraph journalist."

The spokeswoman said the money is well hidden.

"The Milton Keynes gallery is cube-shaped. It is not like an old building where you hide things into niches, or hidden corners. The staff searched thoroughly but we could not find it. There is currently a Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling upside down. We even looked through the branches of the tree, but we did not find any check," she said.

Georgeson assured people his offer is real.

"It won't bounce if somebody finds the check and cashes it. I'm prepared to live with the consequences of that happening, and I could only be prepared if I thought it would really do some good," he told the Telegraph.

The director of the gallery, Anthony Spira, spoke to him on Tuesday. Georgeson initially indicated he would go to the gallery today, but after not turning up Georgeson has cut off communication.

Gunman shoots bus driver in Ala., takes child as hostage

A gunman shot and killed a school bus driver in Midland City, Ala., Tuesday afternoon and escaped the scene with a 6-year-old passenger, which has prompted a hostage situation that is still going on this morning.

The suspected gunman is identified as Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 60-something military veteran, a police source told ABC News. Dykes and the child are in an underground bunker behind his home.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said Tuesday night that the police had information that the little boy "is OK right now." The boy was delivered some needed medication, police told ABC News.

The police have not identified the child or the dead bus driver.

"Extremely sensitive situation. ... Our agents are working very hard with the locals for the best possible outcome to this situation," a federal law enforcement source told ABC News this morning.

Some people in the area were evacuated Tuesday evening, and everyone in the immediate area was notified of the situation, according to Olson.

"Stay at home and pray," Olson told homeowners living in the area.

Olson said multiple agencies have responded to the hostage situation. The FBI has assumed the lead in the investigation, and SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams were surrounding the bunker as of Tuesday night.

The incident began a little after 3:30 p.m. local time Tuesday. An unidentified girl, who was on the bus, told ABC News Radio the bus driver had stopped to drop off some children. The alleged gunman boarded the bus and handed the driver a note, she said.

"And then I don't know what happened after that but he started telling them he needed a kid because of the law coming after him," she said.

Dykes got on the bus and originally demanded that he get two children as hostages. All the children on the bus managed to escape except the 6-year-old boy, a police source told ABC News affiliate WDHN.

"He shot the bus driver, and the driver's foot was on the gas and we went backwards. And everybody started screaming. And then the bus driver was still there and we all got off the bus and went to a neighbor's house," the girl said.

Dykes was scheduled to be in court today for a trial related to charges of menacing, according to court records obtained by WDHN.

Senate Democrats plan fresh push to ease home refinancing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democrats will propose legislation as early as this week to extend a government program that aims to help homeowners with government-backed loans to refinance, according to aides on Capitol Hill.

The proposal would expand on a housing relief bill that Senators Robert Menendez and Barbara Boxer failed to gain traction on last year. The legislation aims to open the door to refinancing for more borrowers who owe more than their properties are worth.

More than 1.8 million borrowers have already won new loans through the Obama administration's Home Affordable Refinance Program that was enacted in 2009 to help borrowers with little or no equity in their homes. But coaxing Congress to tackle broader mortgage relief that was laid out by the president's State of the Union speech last year has been a tough sell.

The new bill would extend the life of HARP through 2014, according to aides. The program, which is currently set to expire this year, provides streamlined financing options for homeowners who are current on their payments and have loans owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-controlled companies that have been propped up by almost $190 billion in taxpayer aid.

The bill excludes a key piece of the White House initiative that would let homeowners refinance into loans backed by the Federal Housing Administration, the U.S. government mortgage insurer, even if their current loans are not backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Last year, Senate Democrats considered a few ideas, all backed by the Obama administration, that would make it easier for a wider range of underwater borrowers to rework their home loans into more favorable rates.

But those plans failed due to Republican resistance.

While analysts said a Democratic bill has some chance of clearing the Senate this year, it would have slim chances of winning approval in the Republican-controlled House.

"Enacting this refinancing legislation will be tough," wrote Jaret Seiberg, a senior policy analyst at Guggenheim Partners, in a note to clients. "We detect little support among House Republican leaders. So even if it can pass the Senate, it may well die in the House."

Tony Perkins Links Military Suicide Rate to the Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council has joined American Family Association?s Buster Wilson in linking the repeal of Don?t Ask Don?t Tell to the military?s suicide rate. Discussing the Pentagon?s new policy on allowing women to serve in combat units yesterday on his radio program, Perkins said that the Obama administration?s work in ?driving Christianity out [and] putting homosexuality in? are ?adding additional stress? that leads to a higher rate of suicide.

Perkins cited no evidence to back up his claim, but as with his ominous and incorrect predictions regarding the consequences of DADT?s repeal, he apparently doesn?t see a need to substantiate his outrageous allegations.

Perkins: The volume of these decisions coming out of this administration is unbelievable, unbelievable. The stress in our military, when you look how they have used the military for their social experimentation: driving Christianity out, putting homosexuality in, suicide rate going through the ceiling. I think it was last year if I recall the numbers there were 349 suicides in 2012 and I believe that?s more than were killed in combat, that?s the highest number since the Pentagon began tracking suicides back in 2001. And what are they doing? Adding additional stress by this social engineering. Unbelievable.

(AP) ? For all the bright lights and razzle-dazzle of the Las Vegas locale, the most illuminating stretches in Michael Mayer's showy new production of "Rigoletto" at the Metropolitan Opera occurred when the three commanding singers were left alone at the front of the stage and the splashy scenery receded into the background.

The opening-act fan dancers were distracting and the third-act topless stripper/hooker was gratuitous. Countess Ceprano resembled Marilyn Monroe and the Count of Monterone was an Arab sheik. Gilda was carried off in a sarcophagus when she was kidnapped, then died in the trunk of a Cadillac Coupe Deville.

Clearly this wasn't the "Rigoletto" that played at the Met 841 previous times over 129 years.

Overall, Mayer's transfer of Verdi's first great middle-period opera from 16th-century Mantua to a 1960 hotel and casino on the Strip resulted in straightforward storytelling. The gamble with regietheater was largely successful, an entertaining, bold rendition that some will conclude lacks new insight and others will find frenetic and fun. The notoriously conservative Met audience mostly cheered the Tony-winning director following Monday night's production premiere, with only a few boos scattered in.

In her first performance since giving birth to her second child in October, Diana Damrau gave a searing, loving portrayal of Gilda, a total melding of her silvery soprano with the persona of a vulnerable, confused young girl, unsure how to deal with her overprotective father and sexual awakening amid the bawdy decadence of Sin City.

Zeljko Lucic let loose a fierce and pained baritone as Rigoletto, combining with Damrau for an unforgettable second-act duet filled with emotion, inflection and even tears. Piotr Beczala as the Duke was a breezy, sleazy leader of the Rat Pack, a Frank Sinatra-type lurching from bender to hookup. His arias were winning and convincing, his tenor perhaps underpowered by the slightest tad.

Even before opening night, there was sharp disagreement among aficionados over Mayer's switch from the Renaissance Palazzo Ducale to a casino floor filled with slot machines, gambling tables and faux neon. The photos and videos posted on the Met's Facebook page inflamed factions pro and con that contemptuously regard each other as Luddites and Jacobins.

The locale of "Rigoletto" changed even before its first performance in 1851 ? Francesco Maria Piave adapted the libretto from an 1832 Victor Hugo play set in France, but objections by censors led to the shift to Italy. In recent decades, Jonathan Miller's controversial 1982 English National Opera production, filled with Mafioso in New York's Little Italy circa 1950, has been followed by concepts as goofy as relocating the action to "The Planet of the Apes" in a 2005 staging in Munich, Germany.

Rigoletto, the Duke's court jester in Piave's libretto, is transformed by Mayer into a hanger-on and comic along the lines of Don Rickles and Joey Bishop. Monterone's curse created what some may perceive as an anti-Semitic overtone.

Like Franco Zeffirelli with his hyper-realistic sets for the Met's productions of "La Boheme," ''Tosca" and "Turandot" in the 1980s, Mayer, set designer Christine Jones and lighting designer Kevin Adams go for spectacle, sometimes at the expense of clarity.

The Duke's opening "Questa o quella (This or that)" is delivered while clothed in a white tuxedo jacket. He waves an arm and croons into a microphone ? no worries, amplification is not used ? as eight dancers shake large yellow-and-orange feathers. Rigoletto's biting humor is lost in the extravaganza, to some extent evaporating that plotline and the reason for the anger of the Duke's toadies.

The staging settles down after that, with a few silhouetted palm trees in green and gold, enabling the basic story to come through: the kidnapping of Gilda by an entourage mistaking her for Rigoletto's mistress, the lecherous Duke's rape of Gilda, her unwavering crush and her father's quest for revenge. In the calamitous conclusion, she disguises herself in a trench coat and hat, allowing herself to be killed by the hit man her father hired to murder the Duke.

The Duke sings "Possente amor (A great love)" while swilling Scotch from a bottle (one verse only) and "La donna e mobile (Women are fickle)" while swinging around the stripper pole.

Monterone is shot in the head at the Duke's apartment ? which has three chandeliers that are replicas of the ones hanging from the Met's ceiling. Sparafucile's inn becomes a seedy strip club out in the desert.

Mayer, making his opera debut, has a keen eye for detail. Gilda dabs tears from her father's eyes and with an embarrassed look buttons the top of her dress as she speaks with her father. She clutches and smells the white coat the Duke leaves on his apartment floor. While nearly all the Duke's buddies watch stone-faced as Rigoletto pleads, Marullo alone is disgusted, turns away and hangs his head.

Susan Hilferty's costumes had the Duke looking dashing, Rigoletto frumpy and Gilda girlish. The supporting cast was top-notch, with Stefan Kocan a vocally and visually imposing Sparafucile and Maria Zifchak a spineless Giovanna. In their Met debuts, Robert Pomakov was a booming Monterone and Oksana Volkova a seductive Maddalena. Emalie Savoy, in a floor-length gown, was a standard for glamour as Countess Ceprano.

Conductor Michele Mariotti impressed, drawing color, energy and dynamics from the orchestra.

Mayer's interjection of a half-naked stripper at the start of the third act was greeted with cheers ? and then countered quickly by a few loud boos. His decision to have the sycophant group remain in the back of the Duke's apartment in the shadows during Gilda's confessional "Tutte le feste (Each holy day)" was jarring, and there the chorus remained through Damrau's chilling high note that ended the "Si, vendetta" duet.

Marring the evening were gimmicky updated Met Titles by Michael Panayos and Paul Cremo. Mayer's direction spoke for itself. No need for the chorus' "Vittoria!" to become "Jackpot!" and Sparafucile's "further on the stream is deeper" to be replaced by "it's a long drive to the river. Make sure you have enough gas!" Some in the audience giggled.

There are seven more performances with this cast through Feb. 23, with the Feb. 16 matinee telecast to theaters around the world. It returns for six nights in April and May with different principal singers. It will be interesting to see how Mayer's vision comes across with other casts.

10 endangered pygmy elephants feared poisoned

A baby pygmy elephant stands beside a dead adult in the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve in Malaysia's Sabah state.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

Ten endangered pygmy elephants have been found dead in suspicious circumstances in Malaysia, according to reports.

Sen Nathan, head veterinarian at the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve in Sabah state on the island of Borneo, said officials "highly suspect" the animals were poisoned, but tests are still to be carried out to determine whether they were deliberately harmed, BBC News reported.

"It was actually a very sad sight to see all those dead elephants, especially one of the dead females who had a very young calf of about three months old. The calf was trying to wake the dead mother up," he said, according to the BBC.

Nathan added the elephants, aged between four and 20, were believed to be from the same family group.

Malaysia?s The Star newspaper said the first elephant died on Dec. 29 and the last was found on Jan. 24.

The paper reported that the dead animals were found in an area that it described as an ?industrial tree plantation.?

The Star said it was not known how the elephants had died, and noted it was possible they had eaten poisonous plants or pesticides.

The BBC cited Masidi Manjun, environmental minister for the Sabah area, as saying it was ?a sad day for conservation and Sabah.?

Malaysia's wildlife officials inspect a dead pygmy elephant.

Conservation charity WWF runs an ?adopt a pygmy elephant? campaign.

According to its website, the animals are found ?only on the northeast tip of the island of Borneo, and inhabit forests near water sources and grasslands. ?

?Borneo pygmy elephants are smaller than other Asian elephants, chubbier, and have bigger ears and tails,? it said. ?They eat roughly 300 pounds of food daily?mostly roots, grasses, leaves, bananas and sugar cane.?

WWF estimates that there are possibly as low as 1,600 individuals in the wild.

?The top threats to pygmy elephants are habitat loss and conflict with humans,? it added.

Liberated Malians celebrate, French-led forces clear Timbuktu

GAO/SEVARE, Mali (Reuters) - Residents of Mali's northern town of Gao, captured from sharia-observing Islamist rebels by French and Malian troops, danced in the streets to drums and music on Sunday as the French-led offensive also drove the rebels from Timbuktu.

The weekend gains made at Gao and Timbuktu by the French and Malian troops capped a two-week whirlwind intervention by France in its former Sahel colony, which has driven al Qaeda-allied militant fighters northwards into the desert and mountains.

In Gao, the largest town in the north where the Islamist insurgents had banned music and smoking, cut off the hands of thieves and ordered women to wear veils, thousands cheered the liberating troops with shouts of "Mali, Mali, France, France".

French special forces backed by Rafale fighter jets and Tiger helicopters had helped capture the town early on Saturday.

Among the celebrating Gao crowds, many smoked cigarettes, women went unveiled and some men wore shorts to flout the severe sharia Islamic law the rebels had imposed for months. Youths on motorcycles flew the flags of Mali, France and Niger, whose troops also helped secure the ancient town on the Niger River.

"Now we can breath freely," said Hawa Toure, 25, wearing a colourful traditional African robe banned under sharia for being too revealing. "We are as free as the wind today. We thank all of our friends around the world who helped us," she said.

French and Malian troops also arrived at the weekend at the fabled Saharan trading town of Timbuktu, more than 300 km (190 miles) to the west of Gao, and were working to restore government control over the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A Malian military source said the French and Malian troops had met no resistance up to the gates of Timbuktu and controlled the airport. They were working on flushing out any Islamist rebel fighters still hiding in the city, a labyrinth of ancient mosques and monuments and mud-brick homes between alleys.

"Timbuktu is delicate, you can't just go in like that," the source, who asked not to be named, said.

A third northern town, the Tuareg seat of Kidal, in Mali's rugged and remote northeast, remains in rebel hands.

The United States and Europe are backing the U.N.-mandated Mali operation as a counterstrike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the West African state's inhospitable Sahara desert as a launch pad for international attacks.

FEARS OF GUERRILLA WAR

Fighters from the Islamist alliance in north Mali, which groups AQIM with Malian Islamist group Ansar Dine and AQIM splinter MUJWA, had destroyed ancient shrines sacred to moderate Sufi Moslems in Timbuktu, provoking international outrage.

They had also applied amputations for thieves and stoning of adulterers under sharia law.

As the French and Malian troops push into northern Mali, African troops from a continental intervention force expected to number 7,700 are being flown into the country, despite delays due to logistical problems and the lack of airlift capacity.

France sent warplanes and 2,500 troops to Mali after its government appealed to Paris for help when Islamist rebels launched an offensive south towards the capital Bamako early in January. They seized several towns, since retaken by the French.

In the face of the two-week-old French-Malian counter offensive, the rebels seemed to be pulling back north into the trackless desert wastes and mountain fastnesses of the Sahara.

Military experts fear they could carry on a gruelling hit-and-run guerrilla war against the government from there.

A leader of Mali's main Tuareg insurgent movement, MNLA, whose initial separatist rebellion in the north was hijacked by al Qaeda and its local Malian allies, offered help from his group's desert fighters to the French-led offensive.

Speaking at Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Ag Mohamed Assaleh said the MNLA was preparing to attack the withdrawing al Qaeda-allied Islamist forces and its leaders, whom he said were hiding in the Tidmane and Tigharghar mountains in Kidal region.

At Konna, 500 km (312 miles) southeast of Gao and recently recaptured from the rebels, some people were still afraid.

"No-one believes the rebels will give up without resisting. They may be regrouping for an attack, there is fear of a guerrilla war," said Salou Toure, a middle-aged resident of Timbuktu who had fled that town three months ago.

"WE CUT HIS THROAT"

In Gao, the atmosphere was jubilant. Malian army Colonel Didier Dacko declared the town "liberated"."I thank France and all friendly nations for helping Mali," he told the crowds.

Gao Mayor Sadou Diallo, who had taken refuge in Bamako during the Islamist occupation, was triumphantly reinstalled.

Around a dozen "terrorists" were killed in the taking of Gao, while French forces suffered no losses or injuries, France's defence ministry said.

Youths in the city said there were still some rebels and rebel sympathisers around, but they were being found. "Yesterday, even, we found one hiding in a house. We cut his throat," one man said, asking not to be named. "Today we found another and we brought him to the army."

Human rights groups have expressed fears of violent reprisals being taken against lighter-skinned Malians suspected of sympathising with the Islamist rebels, who have many Tuaregs and Arabs in their ranks.

At an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, outgoing AU chairman Thomas Boni Yayi, president of Benin, criticised Africa's slow response to the Islamist insurgency in Mali.

"How could it be that when faced with a danger that threatens its very foundations, Africa, although it had the means to defend itself, continued to wait," Yayi said.

OFFERS OF FUNDS, HELP

Around 1,900 African troops, including Chadian, have been deployed to Mali so far as part of the planned U.N.-backed African intervention force, known as AFISMA. Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Niger and Chad are providing troops. Burundi and other nations have pledged to contribute.

The United States and Europe, while providing airlift and intelligence support to the anti-militant offensive in Mali, are not planning to send in any combat troops. Washington agreed to fly tankers to refuel French warplanes.

The AU is expected to seek hundreds of millions of dollars in logistical support and funding for the African Mali force at a conference of donors to be held in Addis Ababa on January 29.

European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs told Reuters in Addis Ababa he believed enough funds would be offered to sustain the African troop intervention for a year.

Piebalgs added the latest estimated cost of the operation he had seen was 430 million euros.

Caterpillar pessimistic on any demand increase for 2013

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc, the world's largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit on Monday due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers.

Caterpillar's bulldozers, tractors and other machines have been accumulating in warehouses due to slowing economies in China, Europe and the United States.

The company said it was able to sell off some of this glut in the fourth quarter, reducing the value of its inventory from the third quarter by $2 billion. Inventory levels, however, remain $1 billion above year-ago levels, and executives expect 2013 to be a "tough year."

Adding to the company's troubles, quarterly results were hit by a charge of 87 cents per share after the company discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought last year.

In a somber note on the global economy, Caterpillar said the "most significant favorable factor" for 2013 profit will be the absence of the ERA accounting fraud writedown, not increased demand for its machines.

"We're encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious," Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement on Monday.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.46 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $1.69 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Wall Street, however, appeared to look past the China accounting fraud mess, sending Caterpillar's shares up 2.1 percent to $97.62 in morning trading.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share analysts expect.

CHINA FRAUD

Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China's fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June, paying $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion).

After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge. The case has opened questions about Caterpillar's research into ERA before the deal, as well as the adequacy of its auditors.

Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company's expansion into China, the world's largest coal producer.

Emory Williams, the chairman of ERA when the Caterpillar deal closed, ended days of silence on Monday, saying in a statement he was "dismayed" by the accounting charge Caterpillar was taking.

Williams said nothing about the accusation of accounting misconduct in his statement.

Citigroup Inc and law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP served as financial and legal advisers to Caterpillar on the transaction. Blackstone and DLA Piper acted as ERA's financial and legal advisers.

A source directly involved with the Caterpillar deal previously told Reuters that RSM Nelson Wheeler was ERA's auditor, while Deloitte and Ernst & Young acted on Caterpillar's side.

None of the auditors has commented.

Aurora Health Care To Lay Off Employees Because Of Obamacare

It looks like Obamacare is having some negative effects on the industry it was intended to help.

Dr. Nick Turkal, CEO of Wisconsin-based non-profit health care provider Aurora Health Care, announced earlier this month that his employer would be cutting jobs due to Obamacare, The Journal Times reports. In a letter to employees he wrote that the company would be receiving $13 million less in government reimbursements forcing it to make ?position eliminations plus discontinuation of some positions in the coming weeks.?

The cuts will be small considering Aurora?s 30,000 current employees but things could get worse in the future. Already, staff has been instructed to cut costs by avoiding making color copies; physicians serving Medicare patients may receive a cut in payments.

?We don?t want people to be afraid, but things are different,? Aurora spokeswoman Myrle Croasdale told the Journal Times.

Aurora isn?t the only one in the health care industry to claim Obamacare is forcing layoffs. Orlando Health, a Florida network of community and specialty hospitals, said it would be laying off 400 employees due to new Obamacare costs, One News Now reports. Likewise, small medical device company ADM Tronics says Obamacare will mean the company will have to lay off employees for the first time in over a decade, according to Fox News.

Obamacare has had positive effects on the health care industry, as well, however. While these companies have reported increased costs, hospitals and insurance companies alike are expected to receive a large influx in payments due to the new health law, Forbes reports. As a result, investors are betting that the industry will see big profits, already driving stocks of various health care companies in the S&P 500 up 7.3 percent this year, The Washington Post reports.

In the fight against obesity, it's all about balance | MNN - Mother ...

What role can a soft drink company play in America?s war on obesity? In the face of controversial decisions like New York City?s soda ban, The Coca-Cola Company believes it can play a role in a healthier diet and has instituted several programs to inspire people to live healthier, active lifestyles. Some of these programs involve rebuilding community parks, while another program calls upon physicians to record physical activity as a vital sign during patient visits. MNN, which counts Coca-Cola as one of its sponsors, interviewed Dr. Rhona Applebaum, Coca-Cola?s Chief Scientific and Regulatory Officer, to find out more. Applebaum received her master?s degree in nutrition from Drexel University and her doctorate in food microbiology from University of Wisconsin. She leads the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs Division at Coca-Cola, which is in part responsible for driving research and education programs about calorie intake, health, physical activity and food safety.

    ?

MNN: What can a soft drink company like Coca-Cola do to help people live healthier lives?
Rhona Applebaum: Coca-Cola?s active, healthy living philosophy is about encouraging people to eat right and move more. I subscribe to the fact that it?s about the whole diet and not about an individual food, which is what some people tend to focus on.

    ?

Active, healthy living is absolutely essential for our company; it?s not just some nice sound bite we like to say ? it?s a fact. We know that our business can only be as healthy as the communities in which we operate. That?s why we?ve supported programs like Triple Play that encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships.

    ?

And in 2012 our philanthropic arm of the Company ? The Coca-Cola Foundation ? awarded almost $10 million to healthy living initiatives across North America.

    ?

Are soft drinks unfairly targeted in your opinion? Do they have a rightful place in the diet?

We firmly believe all our products have a place in an active, healthy lifestyle. Any food or beverage can fit into your life ? it?s all about how much and how often. At the end of the day, we encourage people to be as active as they can be; we encourage and promote physical activity. The higher your energy balance ? balancing the calories you take in with the calories you burn ? the healthier you?re going to be. We consume calories from many different sources. But we shouldn?t single out one food or beverage alone as the unique cause of obesity.

    ?

    Please explain higher energy balance.
?Energy balance? refers to the concept of balancing calories in with calories out to maintain a healthy weight. Let?s compare two people, one who consumes 2,500 calories per day versus one who consumes only 1,500 calories. You might think the person who only eats 1,500 calories a day would look healthier because he appears thin, but that person probably is not getting all the essential nutrients he needs. At 1,500 calories, he?s probably not going to get the necessary physical activity levels, either.

    ?

On the other hand, if you?re eating a balanced diet and taking in 2,500 calories a day and are very physically active (and the activity can be moderate and not necessarily vigorous); if you?re moving and eating and you?re burning as many calories as you consume, then sure, you can enjoy any food and beverage within the Coca-Cola portfolio, including ones that are low-calorie or zero-calorie.

    ?

What has Coca-Cola done to encourage its employees to lead healthier lifestyles?
We have a great wellness facility at our Atlanta headquarters. We have signs throughout our corporate campus reminding employees to take the stairs and to park far away from the entrance. We also provide incentives ?for our employees around the country?to be physically active, including discounted gym memberships, $60-off annual medical contributions just for completing online health assessments, and we also encourage our people to measure their health stats regularly.

    ?

Personally, I have a standing desk. (Yes, I practice what I preach.) But to be healthy, you don?t need anything complicated or expensive. If you work at a desk all day, you need to get moving throughout the day and try to stand as much as you can while you?re on the computer. Simply take a walk when you get a chance during the day or take the stairs ? it?s the little things that will add up. ?

    ?

Do you think Coca-Cola is playing a part in reducing in childhood obesity?
I think we?re a part of the solution but it will take all of us ? government, business and civil society ? working together to find meaningful solutions to such a complex issue. In fact, we worked with the beverage industry to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools in 2006 and replaced them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverage options.? By 2010, we reduced beverage calories delivered to schools by a dramatic 90 percent. We are also working with leaders like The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness to build fitness centers across the country that ?provide the means for people to get active. To help change the way people think about nutrition and exercise we need to work together. What I?d like to see accomplished, and what Coca-Cola is striving for in the schools, is to better develop standards of fitness and nutrition. We have testing standards in basic subjects, but we also need nutrition and fitness standards because kids who eat better, and who are more active, will thrive in school.

    ?

What are the most successful programs Coca-Cola has implemented to date to increase health awareness?
We have several programs that are contributing greatly to fostering and teaching principles of healthy lifestyles, but I?ll name two: Triple Play is a program that was launched in 2005 by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services with support from The Coca-Cola Company to encourage kids to eat a balanced diet, become more physically active and increase their ability to engage in healthy relationships. A review of the program found that boys and girls who participated in Triple Play were more physically active and had a better understanding of nutrition than those who did not participate. The kids? self-esteem also soared.

The National Governors Council on Physical Fitness is also making a big impact. We?ve dedicated more than $5 million to provide 100 communities with new fitness centers for schools. In addition, The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $3.4 million in grants to support fitness and nutrition programs in the U.S. and around the world. Working with the National Foundation for Governor's Fitness Councils and the American College of Sports Medicine, Coca-Cola will place 100 new fitness centers in schools across the U.S. over the next five years. The unbranded centers will feature new fitness equipment and provide more than 5 million workouts annually; helping communities put physical activity back into schools.

    ?

You work in a male-dominated world. What was your experience like going through college and post-graduate?
For my post-graduate work, I focused on science: the theoretical and practical elements in nutrition as well as healthy lifestyle factors; toxicology; plant pathology and sustainable agriculture. Long before the days of social media, I realized the importance of networking and working in a global society. Yes, I?m the first female chief scientist at Coca-Cola. Although women are still underrepresented in science, my abilities were developed because of amazing male mentors. They looked at me as nothing but a professional who they wanted to groom. I am where I am today because of my ?STEM? foundation (science, technology, engineering and math) mentoring. We?re not going to be able to compete in terms of pioneering developments in health and science without that kind of mentoring ... I?m very passionate about that.

    ?

I do think that women are catching up, but we still need more women to go into STEM disciplines. At Wisconsin there were many women Ph.D. candidates in science-related disciplines, but that?s not always the case across the U.S. or globally. And, though more is needed, I am proud to say we have many women working at Coca-Cola throughout the company.

This pair of shots was tumblr'd (tumbled?) and tweeted by Colonel Chris Hadfield, who's currently up on the ISS. (AP) ? Two years after Egypt's revolution began, the country's schism was on display Friday as the mainly liberal and secular opposition held rallies saying the goals of the pro-democracy uprising have not been met and denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

With the anniversary, Egypt is definitively in the new phase of its upheaval.

From the revolt that began Jan. 25, 2011 and led to the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, the country has moved into a deeply divisive struggle between ruling Islamists, who say a string of election victories the past year gives them to right to reshape Egypt, and their opponents, who say Islamists are moving to take complete power.

Overshadowing their struggle is an economy in free-fall that threatens to fuel public discontent. The vital tourism sector has slumped, investment shriveled, foreign currency reserves have tumbled and prices are on the rise. More pain is likely in the coming months if the government implements unpopular new austerity measures.

"Today the Egyptian people continue their revolution," said Hamdeen Sabahi, a leading opposition leader who finished a close third in presidential elections held in June. "They are saying 'no' to the Brotherhood state ... We want a democratic constitution, social justice, to bring back the rights of the martyrs and guarantees for fair elections."

Tens of thousands massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where the 2011 uprising began, and outside Morsi's palace, with more heading to join them from other districts. Banners outside the palace proclaimed, "No to the corrupt Muslim Brotherhood government" and "Two years since the revolution, where is social justice?" Others demonstrated outside the state TV and radio building overlooking the Nile.

Similar if smaller crowds gathered in most of Egypt's main cities, including the Mediterranean cities of Alexandria. The protesters chanted the iconic slogans of the revolt against Mubarak, this time directed against Morsi ? "Erhal! Erhal!" or "leave, leave" and "the people want to topple the regime."

Clashes broke out for a second day on some side streets near Tahrir and police fired tear gas to disperse the young men throwing stones. There were also clashes in Alexandria and Suez, and in the Delta town of Menouf protesters blocked off railway lines, disrupting train services to and from Cairo. The Alexandria clashes left 18 protesters injured, according to Mohammed Sultan, head of Egypt's ambulance services.

The immediate goal of the protesters is a show of strength to push Morsi to amend the constitution, which was pushed through by his Islamist allies and rushed through a national referendum. But more broadly, protesters are trying to show the extent of public anger against what they call the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, the organization Morsi hails from, which they say is taking over the state rather than setting up a broad-based democracy.

Protester Ehab Menyawi said he felt no personal animosity against the Brotherhood but opposed its approach toward Morsi as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

"The Brotherhood thinks that reform was achieved when their man came to power and that in itself is a guarantee for the end of corruption," he said as he marched from the upscale Cairo district of Mohandiseen to Tahrir with some 20,000 others.

Unlike in 2012, when both sides made a show of marking Jan. 25 ? though, granted, not together ? the Brotherhood stayed off the streets for Friday's anniversary. The group said it would honor the occasion with acts of public service, like treating the sick and planting trees. The Brotherhood's ultraconservative allies known as Salafis are also staying off the streets. Their absence may reduce, but not entirely remove, the possibility of violence.

The night before, Morsi gave a televised speech that showed the extent of the estrangement between the two sides. He denounced what he called a "counter-revolution" that is "being led by remnants of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's regime to obstruct everything in the country."

Brotherhood officials have increasingly depicted the opposition as undemocratic, trying to use the streets to overturn an elected leadership.

In another sign of the increasingly bitter tone, new militia-like groups opposed to the Islamists have declared in video messages posted on social networks this week their intention to defend the opposition protesters if attacked. At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured in December when Morsi's supporters descended upon protesters camped outside his palace, starting clashes that lasted for hours with firebombs, swords, knifes and firearms.

The demands of Friday's protesters vary. Some on the extremist fringe of Egypt's loosely knit opposition want Morsi to step down and the constitution adopted last month rescinded. Others are calling for the document to be amended and early presidential elections held.

"I am asking everyone to go out and demonstrate to show that the revolution must be completed and that the revolution must continue," opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei said in a televised message posted on his party's website.

"There must be a constitution for all Egyptians. A constitution that every one of us sees himself in it," said the Nobel peace Laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

Egypt's bestselling novelist and democracy campaigner Alaa al-Aswany marched with ElBaradei on Friday to Tahrir. "It is impossible to impose a constitution on Egyptians, a constitution which was sponsored by the Supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the revolution today will bring this constitution down," he said.

Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, took office in June after a narrow election victory with just under 52 percent of the vote to become the country's first freely elected president.

On the horizon are key elections to choose a new lower house of parliament. The opposition is hoping it can leverage public anger into a substantial bloc in the legislature, but it is still trying to weld together an effective campaign coalition in the face of Islamists' strength at the ballot box.

Last winter, the Brotherhood and Salafis won around 75 percent of the lower house's seats, though the body was later disbanded by court order.

Opponents say Morsi and his Islamist backers have taken that election mandate too far, accusing the secretive, closed Muslim Brotherhood of simply stepping in to fill the shoes of Mubarak's ousted ruling party, only now with a conservative religious bent.

The most glaring example is the constitution itself: Islamists finalized the draft in a rushed, all-night meeting, throwing in amendments to fit their needs, then pushed it through a swift referendum in which only a third of voters participated. The result is a document that could bring a much stricter implementation of Shariah, or Islamic law, than modern Egypt has ever seen.

At the same time, Morsi has kept government policy-making and the choice of appointments almost entirely within the Brotherhood. Members and supporters of the group are being installed bit by bit throughout the state infrastructure ? from governor posts, to chiefs of state TV and newspapers, down to preachers in state-run mosques.

"Egypt is in a bad place, It's been wholly consumed with issues of power, and governance has been left by the wayside. None of this had to be," said Michael W. Hanna, a senior fellow at the New York-based Century Foundation. "It was a conscious decision to eschew reform by consensus. ... For them (the Brotherhood) it's not about reform it's about power."

In Egypt, the danger for the Brotherhood now is that it stands alone as it faces the difficult task of stopping the accelerating slide of the economy. That will require some highly unpopular decisions, including raising taxes and reducing subsidies on fuel and basic foodstuffs. Morsi's government has so far not put forward a cohesive plan, and public anger is growing over mounting prices, unemployment and poverty.

If Morsi and the Brotherhood can't fix the economy, they may try to keep the support of their Islamist base by focusing instead on "the culture war," pushing through a religious agenda of stricter Shariah and more sectarian rhetoric against Egypt's Christian minority, warns Hanna.

"We'll see more polarized politics, and that's a bad omen for actually governing," he said.

Bad Credit? Try These Tips To Improve Your Credit Score. - Finance

Having poor credit means you might not get the results you want from companies that look at your credit. The longer your low credit score lasts, the more limited your financial choices will be. It is possible to repair the credit, however, and you will start to see doors reopening. The tips provided here will help you repair your credit.

Be upfront about your situation with the collectors, and they may be able to make payment arrangements you can afford. Let them know a realistic amount you can pay. Remember that they?re usually open to negotiation.

    Interest Rates

High credit card balances can damage your credit. The first step to repairing credit is to pay those balances down. You should first work on paying down the credit cards with the highest balance or interest rates. Your debt will not grow as fast as before, if you get rid of high interest rates first, and your creditors will see you are making efforts.

You will be able to buy a house and finance it if you maintain a good credit rating. If you wish to have an even higher credit score, make sure that you pay your house mortgage off on time. Home ownership also means you have assets that you can rely on to increase your credit score. This will be useful in case you need to borrow money.

You can work with the credit card companies to start repairing your credit. If you do this you will not go into debt more and make your situation worse than it was. Contact your credit card company and request to change your scheduled due date or interest rate.

You will repair your credit score by paying off your outstanding debts first. Your credit will get worst if you do not start taking action and paying off what you owe.

Order a credit report, and search it for old debts you?ve forgotten about, as well as for outdated information on paid debts. Pay particular attention to correcting any errors. Next, begin to improve upon your past mistakes. Set up a budget to pay off the balance with the most expensive interest rate first, making sure that you have enough to keep your other accounts current each month.

The first step in repairing your credit involves a thorough and careful check to ensure your credit report doesn?t contain erroneous information. You could find mistakes in dates and other factors which can cause the whole item to be removed from the report.

    Credit Card

If you want to repair your credit but do not qualify for a regular credit card, consider a secured credit card. You will most likely be approved for this type of card, but you will have to add money to the card before you can use it so the bank will know that you can pay for all of your purchases. Even though this card will be secured by your own money, you will make payments and manage it as if it were unsecured. This will improve your credit as you show yourself able to make the payments on time.

You should devise a plan to get your debts paid off. Although these accounts won?t be expunged from your credit report, they will reflect the fact that you have paid them in full, and the problems you have encountered as a result of having unpaid debts on your report will be reduced or eliminated.

Do not live beyond your means. This is nothing short of a lifestyle overhaul. In many cases, people are using credit cards to buy things they want, rather than focusing on things that they need. Keep track of your spending habits and income, then realistically create a budget that will get you out of your debt dilemma.

Turn a negative into a positive. Repairing your credit standing is not impossible, although it will take some discipline and patience. Take comfort in the fact that you do have no-cost options to repair your credit; all it takes is a little bit of footwork to get it done. Use the hints from this article and you will soon begin to fix your credit.

If you are new with analysis of the stock market today, you might not have known about all these things. While you?ve learned some information, there is much more to know. You will soon find yourself an expert if you start to use this helpful advice today.

Personal Bankruptcy: Do I Have Any Choices? | Value Stock ...

Is your debt piling up to the point that a bankruptcy seems like the only option? Do not worry, because you are not the only one. There are thousands of people who file for bankruptcy every day. This article will give you the information you need to make your bankruptcy go smoothly.

Regardless of how terrible your situation is, when you choose to file for bankruptcy, always be honest. It can be catastrophic to make up things about your assets and debts. Also, it is against the law. You could even spend time in prison for lying about this information.

Prior to choosing a bankruptcy attorney, seek a free consultation with at least three attorneys. Ensure that your meeting is actually with the attorney, not with a paralegal or an assistant. People in these positions are unable to offer legal advice. Searching for the best lawyer will help you located the comfort you need during this time.

Lots of people who file for bankruptcy say they will never use credit cards again. This is not a smart move, since using credit wisely allows you to build a solid credit history. If you never use credit, you won?t be able to rebuild the good credit that you will need to make future purchases. Start with having a single credit card to help you go in the proper direction.

Keep the concept of shame out of your head if you are contemplating bankruptcy. For many people, bankruptcy is a source of guilt and feelings of worthlessness. Although dealing with a bankruptcy is stressful, try to focus on the positive. The best way of dealing with bankruptcy is to keep a positive attitude during this time of financial upset.

Don?t stop the the bankruptcy process if you find a job. Filing for bankruptcy may still be the best way forward for you. The timing of your bankruptcy filing can greatly affect the amount you will be required to repay. If you can file for bankruptcy before receiving additional income, this extra money won?t count against you.

It?s a good idea to contact the three major credit bureaus and get fresh copies of the credit reports they have on you once your bankruptcy is a few months behind you. You should double-check all the information on those reports to ensure their accuracy. If you find any discrepancies, immediately follow up on them so you can continue to repair your credit.

It is essential to always be candid in your bankruptcy petition and subsequent documents. Hiding things from the court can get your case dismissed with no option to refile.
