Open call for art and poetry for MLK celebration at ... - Banner Graphic

The Putnam County Public Library is seeking submissions of original artwork and poetry from all ages for an art exhibition, poetry reading and celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday, Jan. 19.

In addition to an art exhibition and poetry reading, the library's MLK Day event will include a children's program with activities, and an adult program featuring a talk by John Dittmer, DePauw University professor emeritus of history, and a dramatic reading by local actress Gigi Jennewein Fenlon.

The program is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.

The art exhibition will run from Jan. 19-Feb. 16.

The library is encouraging submissions from artists and poets of all ages, both children and adults. Artwork should be brought to the library on either Monday, Jan. 14 or Tuesday, Jan.15 between 9 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.

Visual arts guidelines include:

-- Submissions of 2D media (painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, mixed media) and 3D media (ceramics, sculpture, etc.) will be accepted.

-- Each individual may submit up to two works, however the library may need to edit one of these due to space limitations.

-- 2D works will be limited to no larger than 30 inches in any dimension, and 3D works no larger than 30 inches in width.

-- 2D works must be either framed, matted or mounted on a rigid surface to enable hanging and display.

-- 3D works should be free-standing (not requiring propped or additional support to stand), and weigh less than 50 pounds.

The library encourages a range of expression and media, however the staff will edit work that may be considered inappropriate for a public space.

Submission forms may be picked up at the Putnam County Public Library in advance or filled out upon delivery of artwork

Anyone who cannot submit his or her artwork during these times may contact Barbara Timm at 653-2755 (Ext. 113) or btimm-@putnam.lib.in.us.

Poetry guidelines include:

-- Poems must be original work on the topic of civil rights.

-- Submissions must be typed and no longer than 50 lines.

-- Deadline for poetry submissions is at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. Submissions should be emailed to press@putnam.lib.in.us or mailed to: Putnam County Public Library, P.O. Box 116, Greencastle, IN 46135.
