Good Communication Matters | Steve Britton

steve brittonLast month a friend forwarded an article to me. The title of the article was, ?A Broken Heart Can Kill?. I would say the article was interesting, but truthfully, ?disturbing? is probably a more accurate description of my reaction.

The article described what doctors are now calling ?Broken Heart Syndrome.? Broken Heart Syndrome occurs when the heart shuts down physically for emotional reasons. Strong waves of fear, anxiety, anger, grief or other emotions can literally stun the heart muscle to the point where it no longer pumps. So in effect, the Syndrome?s symptoms mimic a heart attack.

The article?s author, therapist and television personality Mary Jo Rapini, writes, ?Study after study has proven you can die from a broken heart, proving further that true love as well as intense grief is felt at a cellular level in the body.? She also reports that recovery is possible, but that treating physicians and therapists agree the best medicine for surviving Broken Heart Syndrome is a quick infusion of communication, connection and support.

In other words ? good communication matters. It matters so much that its presence or absence in our lives can even become a life or death matter.

I mention this now because if there were ever a good time to reorder our priorities in favor of high quality communication and healthier relationships, the month of January is it.?January?is also a great month to have a mini reunion. We have a whole new year stretching out before us ? 12 pristine shiny months we can do whatever we like with. We can spend those months isolating or connecting, laughing or crying, giving or withholding, receiving or rejecting. We can allocate our time to projects or people, conversations or possessions, courtesy or curtness.

Truthfully, we will want and need to do some of each in the year to come. There will be days when we do not feel like talking ? or listening ? and times we are all about sharing our lives with loved ones. There will be times when our emotional resilience is lower and times when we feel emotionally very strong. We will have moments when we have a lot to give and moments when we feel we have little or nothing to offer. This is life ? this is normal ? this is what being human is all about.

But this is also when relationships matter the most. Only the strongest, healthiest relationships can survive the inevitable, unpredictable ups and downs of each participant?s daily life. Since all healthy relationships are built on a foundation of good communication, I thought now would be an excellent time to review some good communication basics.

To do this, I draw from a favorite resource, The New York Times bestselling book (for eight years running) ?The Four Agreements? by don Miguel Ruiz. As you will see, Ruiz? work is all about communication. His four simple Agreements function equally well in professional and personal communication settings. You will also notice how well each Agreement works with and supports the others. After each Agreement I also share a few of my own thoughts about how each can work to support good communications and healthy relationships.

The First Agreement: Be impeccable with your word.

Here, simply be honest. Be forthright. Treat others the way you want to be treated by speaking to others the way you want to be spoken to. Treat yourself well too. Wait to let strong emotions pass before responding in tense situations. Don?t gossip. Seek the highest interpretation for the other person?s words and start the conversation there.

The Second Agreement: Don?t take anything personally.

Remember that just as you think quite a bit about yourself, your goals, your dreams, your hopes and your life, so too are others consumed with similar thoughts about themselves. Whether someone reaches out in anger or in love, their action says far more about their life than they do about yours, or even about your relationship with them or your value to them.

The Third Agreement: Don?t make assumptions.

Rather, ask questions. Making assumptions is a great way to avoid honest conversation. If you catch yourself wondering about something that is said or how someone is acting, recognize that you have an opportunity to make a connection by asking them about it. As well, any time you challenge your own assumptions, do so with kindness towards yourself and others.

The Fourth Agreement: Always do your best.

Recognize here that some days your best will be really good and other days it won?t be good at all. In other words ? keep trying to meet the other participant in the conversation halfway, understanding that some days you will fall short, other days you will overreach and still other days you will meet each other right in the middle.

Happy communicating, Happy reconnecting, and Happy New Year!

Samsung to expand US operations with two new California facilities

Samsung

Samsung will be taking several steps towards strengthening its U.S. presence with two new facilities to be constructed in 2013. The Korean handset and chip manufacturer already has some notable presence in the Bay Area, and has big plans to expand that in the coming year. The first big move is a 1.1 million square foot building to be constructed in San Jose with its current display and semiconductor business, which will be used for SSI (Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.) R&D and sales teams.

The second step will be moving the current SISA (Samsung Information Systems America) R&D Center to two new 6 story business buildings (and a 6 story parking structure) located in North San Jose. These new buildings will total about 385,000 square feet on 8.5 acres of land. The buildings are set to be finished in 2013, with full occupancy in 2014.

That's some big investment from Samsung, and these changes will surely help bring some operating efficiency to a very large company that currently has divisions spread across multiple countries. You can find a press release with some of the specifics after the break.

?UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II? Live Results and Play-by-Play

?UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II? is officially jumping off inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Facebook kicks off tonight?s festivities by streaming three preliminary bouts at approximately 6:35PM ET/3:35PM PT.

Fans simply have to ?Like? the UFC?s Facebook page in order to watch the scraps live.

FX will then broadcast the remaining four prelims starting at 8PM ET/5PM PT. Unfortunately the UFC?s generosity ends there, as fans will have to pay for the goods when the pay-per-view begins at 10PM ET/7PM PT.

A heavyweight rematch between reigning champion Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez headlines the show. Lightweights Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller serve as the co-featured attraction.

Preliminary Card:

(Facebook 6:35PM ET/3:35PM PT)

John Moraga Defeated Chris Cariaso via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 1:11 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: The flyweights are exchanging leg kicks early. Moraga getting the better of the standup battle thus far. He picks?Cariaso up and drops him on the canvas, though allows him back up. Moraga?s strategy appears to be to counter. Cariaso lands a kick to the ribs. He follows up with a nice combo. Close round. Cariaso, 10-9.

2ndRound: Moraga has him clinched against the cage. Cariaso eats a short elbow and knee to the grill. Cariaso trips to the mat after a failed head kick. Moraga stood over him, but doesn?t try to keep him there. Cariaso gets a body lock and takes Moraga down. That may have won Cariaso another close frame. Cariaso, 10-9.

3rdRound: Moraga scores with a combo to start off the final stanza. Cariaso has him clinched against the cage. Moraga reverses and slaps on a front choke on an unsuspecting Cariaso. It looks like a standing arm-in guillotine choke. What a rally by Moragao.

Max Holloway Defeated Leonard Garcia Defeated via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Gotta believe this is do or die for Leonard Garcia. Unless he gets the Dan Hardy treatment, of course. Holloway doing a good job of maximizing his reach advantage by unleashing leg kicks. Garcia eats a left hand and hits the canvas for a brief moment. Holloway scores with a left hook to the mug. Garcia answers with a big right hand that stuns the youngster. Holloway tags him with a spinning back-kick to the midsection. Garcia comes firing back with a flurry of rights. Holloway, 10-9.

2ndRound: Friendly reminder, Holloway took this scrap on two weeks notice. Arrant knee by Holloway and Garcia capitalizes by picking him up and slamming him to the ground. Holloway bounces right back up. Garcia connects with a one-two combo. He clocks Holloway with a big right hook. Garcia, 10-9.

3rdRound: I wouldn?t be surprised if some judges had Garcia up 2-0 heading into the final frame. Holloway nails him with a knee to the stomach. Garcia doing what he does, charges forward unfazed. Holloway lands a right hand, but Garcia comes firing back. Garcia had stood in the center of the Octagon and dictated the pace of the entire fight. Garcia plants him on his back. Holloway wiggles free. Good for Garcia, he?s competing like his UFC career depends on it. It will probably pay off with a decision victory. Garcia, 10-9, and likely won, 29-28.

Todd Duffee Defeated Phil DeFries via TKO (Punches) at 2:04 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Duffee takes his legs out with a vicious kick. Duffee is bringing the pain. DeFries weathers the storm and plants Duffee on his back. Duffee blocks several violent punches with his face. 2ndRound: Jury tags him with a head kick. Johnson appears very tentative on his feet, not wanting to make another mistake and get taken down again. So much for that, Jury catches an arrant kick and plants Johnson on his back. He?s not doing anything devastating, but just enough to maintain control. Jury, 10-9.

3rdRound: Johnson comes out with a much greater sense of urgency. Jury has him clinched against the cage and easily trips him to the mat with four minutes to work. He?s looking to transition to full mount, though Johnson doing a nice job of defending. That?s about all Johnson has been doing this entire fight ? defending. Jury is simply schooling him. Jury, 10-9, and runs the table, 30-27.

Jamie Varner Defeated Melvin Guillard via Split Decision (30-27, 27-30, 30-27)

1stRound:?Guillard is punishing his legs early. The crowd is getting anxious. Varner?s takedown attempt gets stuffed. Varner is firing away and appears to have stunned his opponent. He slaps on a guillotine choke just as the horn blares. Slow-paced round until the final seconds. Varner, 10-9.

2ndRound: Brunson gets double under-hooks and is working hard for another takedown. Leben manages to throw him off this time.?Brunson scores with a powerful takedown. Leben gets to his feet. Brunson?s punches are coming out much slower than earlier. Leben has to notice how winded his opposition is. Both middleweights appear to be moving in slow motion at the moment. Brunson, 10-9.

3rdRound: Leben comes out smiling as if he knows something we don?t. Brunson has him staring up at the lights and has four minutes to work. Arkansas Family Fights to Bring Daughter Home

An international story is hitting close to home for a Northwest Arkansas family.

"She fits into our family perfectly."

Kendra and Jason Skaggs are waiting to bring their 5-year-old daughter home to Bella Vista. People say she looks just like them, and the Skaggs family already considers her part of the family. But with pictures hanging on the walls and an empty place in their hearts, they are waiting to see if she will ever come home.

"I just fell in love with her immediately. When I got to the orphanage and I saw her rolled out, I knew that was her and I knew in my heart that she was my daughter," said Kendra.

But, Polina Joy Skaggs might never know the love of a family.

"We've told her we're coming back in 30 days to get you and bring you home with us and shown her pictures of her bedroom. We may never be able to go back and see her again."

Polina has spent her entire life in orphanages and hospitals in Russia, and is living with spina bifida. After traveling to Russia twice and visiting with her on 10 different occasions, Kendra said Polina is not getting the care and medical attention she needs at the orphanage. Once she is in the United States, they know she will need surgeries, physical therapy and occupational therapy.

"She doesn't have the unconditional love of a family, she doesn't know the love of Jesus and I know she's there, but I can't take care of her and I can't comfort her."

But Friday morning, Russian president Vadimir Putin signed a bill, banning the adoption of Russian children by American families.

"On our court date they told us that there was talk now that if the law was approved they were going to stop all adoptions, including the ones that had already been through the court system."

Russia's upper house of parliament unanimously approved the ban. With President Vladimir Putin's signature, the ban will become reality.

Many believe the proposed ban is in retaliation of a bill President Barack Obama signed early in December, which freezes the American assets of Russians accused of abusing human rights.

The law has been met with harsh criticism in Russia by government officials and civilians.

"I ask myself, what am I going to do. It will be devastating for our entire family including my son, he considers her his sister," said Kendra.

Kendra and Jason have an 8-year-old son named Carter, who has Asperger's Syndrome. Kendra is a special education teacher at Mary Mae Jones Elementary School in Bentonville, and she believes working with disabled children is a blessing.

"It was at that time that God really put it on my heart to adopt a special needs child."

The Skaggs recently purchased a van so they could accommodate Polina's wheelchair. Kendra said they have changed their entire lives around, so they can help her, accommodate her, and help her reach her full potential.

So as a bedroom sits empty, waiting for Polina, the Skaggs family is ready to take on the lifelong committment of caring for their little princess.

"For us, it's not about having an easy life, it's about having a fulfilling life. God called us to care for the orphans... and we're following that call in adopting Polina."

And as they wait for answers, the Skaggs are keeping faith that some day soon, they will be a family of four.

"If we can bring her home then I'm going to sob in relief and just rejoice that we're able to have her."

The Skaggs family is planning to bring Polina home January 29. But with the ban now a reality, they are hoping and praying adoptions that have already been approved will be allowed to proceed. Kendra said even if they move to Russia, Americans that live in the country still cannot adopt Russian children.

The adoption process started 13 months ago and costs around $45,000. At first, Kendra and Jason did not know how they were going to make it work, but said God provided for them. Through fundraisers, the community and even thanks to people they have never met, they were able to raise enough money to make their dream come true.

Kendra said the day she brings Polina home will be the best day of her life, next to the day her son was born.

Liquid crystal research, future applications advance

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Contributing geometric and topological analyses of micro-materials, University of Massachusetts Amherst mathematician Robert Kusner aided experimental physicists at the University of Colorado (UC) by successfully explaining the observed "beautiful and complex patterns revealed" in three-dimensional liquid crystal experiments. The work is expected to lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled.

Kusner is a geometer, an expert in the analysis of variational problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, which concerns properties preserved under continuous deformation such as stretching and bending. His work over 3 decades has focused on the geometry and topology of curves, surfaces and other spaces that arise in nature, such as soap films, knots and the shapes of fluid droplets. Kusner agrees with physicist and lead author Ivan Smalyukh of UC Boulder that their collaboration is the first to show in experiments that some of the most fundamental topological theorems hold up in real materials. Their findings appear in the current early online issue of Nature.

UMass Amherst's Kusner explains, "There are two important aspects of this work. First, the experimental work by the Colorado team, who fabricated topologically complex micro-materials allowing controlled experiments of three-dimensional liquid crystals. Second, the theoretical work performed by us mathematicians and theoretical physicists while visiting the University of California Santa Barbara's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). We provided the geometric and topological analysis of these experiments, to explain the observed patterns and predict what patterns should be seen when experimental conditions are changed."

Kusner was the lone mathematician among four organizers of last summer's workshop on "Knotted Fields" at KITP, which led to this work. The workshop engaged about a dozen other mathematicians and about twice as many theoretical and experimental physicists in a month-long investigation of the interplay between low-dimensional topology and what physicists call "soft matter."

In their experiments, the physicists at UC Boulder showed that tiny topological particles injected into a liquid crystal medium behave in a manner consistent with established theorems in geometry and topology, Kusner says. The researchers say they have thus identified approaches for building new materials using topology.

UC Boulder's Smalyukh and colleagues set up the experiment by first creating colloids, solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed but not dissolved in a host medium, such as milk, paint and shaving cream. Specifically, they injected tiny, different-shaped particles into a liquid crystal, which behaves something like a liquid and a solid. Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology.

Smalyukh says, "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists. These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

For example, he adds, these topological liquid crystal colloids could be used to upgrade current liquid crystal displays like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new, more energy efficient ways.

U.S. stocks cut most losses; yen hits two-year low

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks recovered from sharp losses to end only slightly lower on Thursday after the U.S. House of Representative said it would come back to work this weekend in a last-ditch effort to avoid the "fiscal cliff," while the yen hit a two-year low on expectations of bold monetary stimulus in Japan.

It was a fourth straight session of losses for U.S. stocks, while world stocks ended slightly higher.

Wall Street stocks tumbled in morning trade after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the top Senate Democrat, said the United States may be poised to go off the "fiscal cliff." But in late trading, the House of Representatives said it set a work session for Sunday night ahead of the December 31 deadline for reaching a deal, paring losses that earlier that earlier had driven all three major stock indexes down about 1 percent.

Economists warn that the $600 billion in higher taxes and spending cuts set to kick in from January could push the world's largest economy into recession, dragging other countries with it.

"There's no conviction in the move or the overall market, based on the across-the-board reduction we've seen in volume ... but there will be continued weakness until there's sustained positive direction coming from our leaders," said Joseph Cangemi, managing director at ConvergEx Group, in New York.

The House of Representatives may stay in session until January 2, the final day of the current Congress, according to a Twitter message from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

That is the day that another component of the "fiscal cliff" - $109 billion in automatic spending cuts to military and domestic programs - is set to start.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dipped 18.28 points, or 0.14 percent, to end at 13,096.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 1.74 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,418.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 4.25 points, or 0.14 percent, at 2,985.91.

Shares of U.S. retailers fell for a second day following the Christmas holiday. The Morgan Stanley retail index <.mvr> was down 0.2 percent.

The MSCI global index <.miwd00000pus> was last up 0.1 percent, while European shares <.fteu3> ended down 0.01 percent.

President Barack Obama returned to Washington on Thursday, cutting short his holiday to try to get a budget deal with Republican lawmakers.

EURO DIPS, YEN SLUMPS

The dollar rose to 86.15 yen on Reuters data, its highest since mid-August 2010. It was last up 0.5 percent at 86.02 yen.

The dollar has risen 12 percent against the yen in 2012, on track for its biggest annual gain since 2005. Yen selling has accelerated in the past two months on expectations that Shinzo Abe would be elected prime minister and would pursue policies to weaken the Japanese currency.

The Liberal Democratic Party won the elections on December 16, making Abe the prime minister. Since then, he has kept up pressure on the Bank of Japan to attack deflation and weaken the yen.

"If everyone is simply going to take Mr. Abe at his word, then we can go a lot further before this move is done," said Kit Juckes, strategist at Societe Generale in London.

The euro rose 0.2 percent to $1.3242.

U.S. BONDS TRADE HIGHER, OIL EASES

Prices on longer-dated U.S. Treasuries were higher after Reid's fiscal cliff comments and after the Conference Board, an industry group, reported a bigger-than-expected drop in American consumer confidence in December.

Benchmark 10-year Treasuries prices were 4/32 higher in price, yielding 1.7355 percent.

Brent crude futures ended down slightly as the unresolved U.S. budget talks left open the possibility that mandated tax hikes and spending cuts could be enacted, which could push the United States, the world's top oil-consumer, into recession.

Brent February crude fell 27 cents, or 0.24 percent, to settle at $110.80 a barrel. U.S. February crude slipped 11 cents, or 0.12 percent, to settle at $90.87.

In the precious metals market, gold prices rose for a fourth straight day for their longest winning stretch in nearly two months. But the gains were small for a market seen as a key hedge to the U.S. fiscal crisis.

Gold's February futures contract on COMEX, the most active on the New York exchange, settled at $1,663.70 an ounce, up $3, or 0.2 percent on the day. Over the past week, it has gained $17.80, or just over 1 percent, after hitting a four-month low of $1,645.90 on December 20.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? A powerful winter storm brought snow to inland parts of the Northeast and driving rain and wind to areas along the coast Thursday, a day after it swept through the nation's middle, dumping a record snowfall in Arkansas and wrecking post-holiday plans for thousands of travelers.

The storm, which was blamed for 12 deaths, pushed through the Upper Ohio Valley and made its way into the Northeast Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, there was anywhere from a few inches of snow to a foot in some locations.

National Weather Service spokesman David Roth said the Northeast's heaviest snowfall would be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states before the storm ended Friday morning and headed to Canada.

Dale Lamprey, who was clearing off the sidewalk outside the legislative office building in Concord, N.H., already had several hours of shoveling under his belt by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

"I got here at quarter of five and it's been windy, it's been snowing and I think it changed over to sleet and freezing rain at one point," he said. "It's pretty bad."

He didn't expect it to get much better.

"I'm going to be shoveling all day, just trying to keep up with the snow," he said. "Which is impossible."

The East Coast's largest cities ? New York, Philadelphia and Boston ? were seeing mostly high winds and rain Thursday morning. Other areas were getting a messy mix of rain and snow or just rain ? enough to slow down commuters and those still heading home from visits with family.

Thousands of travelers were trying to make it home Thursday after the fierce storm stranded them at airports or relatives' homes around the region. Some inbound flights were delayed in Philadelphia and New York's LaGuardia, but the wet and windy weather wasn't leading to delays at other major East Coast airports.

A flight that landed safely in Pittsburgh during the storm Wednesday night got stuck in snow for about two hours on the tarmac.

The American Airlines flight arrived between 8 and 9 p.m., but then ran over a snow patch and got stuck.

Airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette workers tried for nearly two hours to tow the plane to the gate before deciding to bus passengers to the terminal.

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed on Wednesday and scores of motorists got stuck on icy roads or slid into drifts. Said John Kwiatkowski, an Indianapolis-based meteorologist with the weather service: "The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex."

The storm system spawned Gulf Coast region tornadoes on Christmas Day, startling people like Bob and Sherry Sims of Mobile, Alabama, who'd just finished dinner.

"We heard that very distinct sound, like a freight train," said Bob Sims. They headed for a center bathroom.

Power was still out at the Sims' home on Wednesday, but the house wasn't damaged and they used a generator to run heaters to stay warm. Some neighbors were less fortunate, their roofs peeled away and porches smashed by falling trees.

The storm also left freezing temperatures in its aftermath, and forecasters said parts of the Southeast from Virginia to Florida saw severe thunderstorms.

Schools on break and workers taking holiday vacations meant that many people could avoid messy commutes, but those who had to travel were urged to avoid it. Snow was blamed for scores of vehicle accidents as far east as Maryland, and about two dozen counties in Indiana and Ohio issued snow emergency travel alerts, urging people to go out on the roads only if necessary.

About 40 vehicles got bogged down trying to make it up a slick hill in central Indiana, and four state snowplows slid off roads as snow fell at the rate of 3 inches an hour in some places.

Officials in Ohio blamed the bad weather for a crash that killed an 18-year-old girl, who lost control of her car Wednesday afternoon and smashed into an oncoming snow plow on a highway northeast of Cincinnati.

A man and a woman in Evansville, Ind., were killed when the scooter they were riding went out of control on a snowy street Wednesday and they were hit by a pickup truck.

Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision, and two people, including a 76-year-old Milwaukee woman, were killed Tuesday on Oklahoma highways. Deaths from wind-toppled trees were reported in Texas and Louisiana. Other storm-related deaths include a man checking on a disabled vehicle near Allentown, Pa., who was struck and killed Wednesday night, and two people killed in separate crashes in Virginia.

The day after Christmas wasn't expected to be particularly busy for AAA, but its Cincinnati-area branch had its busiest Wednesday of the year. By mid-afternoon, nearly 400 members had been helped with tows, jump starts and other aid, with calls still coming in, spokesman Mike Mills said.

In Arkansas, some of the nearly 200,000 people who lost power could be without it for as long as a week because of snapped poles and wires after ice and 10 inches of snow coated power lines, said the state's largest utility, Entergy Arkansas.

Other states also had scattered outages.

As the storm moved east, New England state highway departments were treating roads and getting ready to mobilize with snowfall forecasts of a foot or more.

Few truckers were stopping into a TravelCenters of America truck stop in Willington, Conn., near the Massachusetts border early Thursday. Usually 20 to 30 an hour stop in overnight, but high winds and slushy roads had cut that to two to three people an hour.

"A lot of people are staying off the road," said Louis Zalewa, 31, who works there selling gasoline and staffing the store. "I think people are being smart."

As usual, winter-sports enthusiasts welcomed the snow. At Smiling Hill Farm in Maine, Warren Knight was hoping for enough snow to allow the opening of trails.

"We watch the weather more carefully for cross-country skiing than we do for farming. And we're pretty diligent about farming. We're glued to the weather radio," said Knight, who described the weather at the 500-acre farm in Westbrook as being akin to the prizes in "Cracker Jacks ? we don't know what we're going to get."

Behind the storm, Mississippi's governor declared states of emergency in eight counties with more than 25 people reported injured and 70 homes left damaged.

Cindy Williams stood near a home in McNeill, Miss., where its front had collapsed into a pile of wood and brick, a balcony and the porch ripped apart. Large oak trees were uprooted and winds sheared off treetops in a nearby grove. But she focused instead on the fact that all her family members had escaped harm.

"We are so thankful," she said. "God took care of us."

Sleep Apnea Linked to Heart Disease

A new study has found a link between sleep apnea and heart disease, very similar to the link between diabetes and heart disease.

Results from the study, which was conducted by Romanian researchers, show that of those with obstructive sleep apnea (which can cause a person to stop breathing during sleep), arteries are stiffer than the arteries of people without the condition. Stiff arteries are directly linked to greater heart risks.

These stiff arteries are similar to the arterial stiffness seen in people with diabetes that in turn increases their risk of heart disease. If you think you might be at risk for diabetes or heart disease, explore your options for preventive screenings now.

Dick Armey Led A Literal Armed Coup At ... - Business Insider

AP

New details have emerged yesterday about the events leading up to Dick Armey's ouster as the head of the Tea Party affiliated FreedomWorks group.

Initially, all that was known about Armey's exit was that it involved an "internal clash,"?primarily between Armey and the group's president Matt Kibbe.?

Armey is set to recieve $8 million in consulting fees over 20 years paid for by Richard Stephenson, a Republican fundraiser and founder of Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

The new details indicate that this was an extremly literal clash.

On September 4 Armey, flanked by his wife and an aide, lead an actual armed coup against several coworkers prior to the election.?

From Amy Gardner at the Washington Post, here's what happened:

Richard K. Armey, the group?s chairman and a former House majority leader, walked into the group?s Capitol Hill offices with his wife, Susan, and an aide holstering a handgun at his waist. The aim was to seize control of the group and expel Armey?s enemies: The gun-wielding assistant escorted FreedomWorks? top two employees off the premises, while Armey suspended several others who broke down in sobs at the news.

The overthrow lasted six days and at the end of it all Armey left FreedomWorks with an $8 million severance package. Evidently Richard Stevenson wanted Armey out and the fired staff in and was willing to pay for Armey's exit.

All of Armey's "enemies" now remain at the Tea Party group.?

Apple patents a method to refine curved glass for displays and beyond

Apple patents a method to refine curved glass for displays and beyond

The curved screens of Samsung's Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus helped them stand out in the smartphone crowd, but it's clearer than ever that the company doesn't have a lock on the idea. Apple is exploring the concept as well: it just received a patent for a technique that molds thin glass into bent or curved shapes without a drawn-out process or using risky chemicals. By having alignment tools shift along with hotter temperatures during a glass slumping process, where the material shapes itself around a mold, Apple can bend glass without any interference -- leading to curvy surfaces that are both quicker to make and higher quality. A patent doesn't mean that we'll see a curved iPhone in the immediate future, though. Apple leaves its options open and suggests that anything from mice to TVs could be candidates, should the company take action at all. If the patent ever applies to real-world products, however, we'll have an inkling as to how the bendy shapes came to be.

A Guide To Buying The Solar Panels - News and Society

A solar panel is a device that converts light from the sun into usable electricity, the same electricity we use to power our homes, devices, appliances, and even some vehicles. The stronger the solar light is, the more energy can the solar equipment generate. Using solar power comes with many advantages. You can visit www.novaenergy.co.nz/solar-panel for more details.

For instance, if you use your solar heat equipment to power your electric based heating system, you won?t experience any recurring monthly expenses linked to the heating of your home. When you use oil or gas-based heaters, you must pay the gas or oil consumption cost monthly in order to uphold the continuous heating of your home. Check www.novaenergy.co.nz/solar-water-heating out.

Since solar energy is free of charge, you can run your electric based heating or cooling system without experiencing any additional monthly expenses. A lot of people like to use solar power for the reason that it is a clean energy source, and not hurtful to the environment. Some countries, the US included, in fact offer tax incentives and benefits to people who buy solar panels and produce their own electricity!

Now, when buying these heat panels, there are many things to consider. One of the most essential factors is to consider your electrical requirements. Check or estimate the power consumption required for any of the electrical appliances in your home that you?d like to power with your solar heat system. Most people use the energy to heat their water, because a water heater or air conditioner typically consumes a lot of electricity.

Make an inventory of the wattage ratings for any electrical appliances you might want to power with the solar panel, add up all those wattage amounts and that will provide you with an idea about the amount of electricity you are consuming monthly when using those particular devices and appliances. When selecting your panels, select the ones with a slighter higher wattage rating than the amount you calculated from your inventory. This ensures that the panels you will be buying will have enough power production for your appliances.

Considering the desired position for your panels can also have an effect on how much you expend on the purchase. You want your solar equipment to have maximum light exposure during the day. The most favorable placement of a solar panels involves installing them so that they directly face the sun between the hours of 9AM to 3PM, which is when the sun is at its brightest. There are add-ons that can be purchased to help guarantee maximum light compilation by the solar heat system. A solar tracker is an example of this, but it is an additional outlay. Furthermore, because the solar tracker is powered by electricity generated from the panel, the output of your panels will be lessened by its power utilization. After all, you can visit www.novaenergy.co.nz for more solar panels.
