For the NFL, the ball drops at 345 Park Avenue on Tuesday, March 12, at 4:00 p.m.? That?s when the 2013 league year begins.

This year, the clock strikes twelve ? sort of ? three days earlier.

From Saturday, March 9 through Monday, March 11, teams will be allowed to negotiate with looming free agents, by communicating directly with their agents.

Based on a calendar of key 2013 dates the NFL has circulated, the negotiating window apparently closes at midnight ET on Tuesday.? Then, 16 hours later, contracts can be negotiated and signed.

What it means is that, starting at midnight on Saturday the 9th, reports will surface of agreements in principle.? Technically, they?ll be unenforceable.? And it?s possible that there will be some double dealing and reneging and other intrigue, with reports of agreements with one team leaked in order to push other teams to getting deals done.

Regardless, the real negotiations will begin at or about the Scouting Combine later this month.? That?s when the illegal tampering always begins, and everyone does it.

And they?ll continue to do it unless and until some unlucky team gets caught and receives the bounty treatment, absorbing a penalty so significant that it scares everyone else straight.

At least for a little while.

Bacteria Found to Thrive on Gold

A newly discovered biochemical technique could aid in the recovery of the precious metal from mine waste

Gold prospectors may one day use Petri dishes to help with their quests. A species of bacterium forms nanoscale gold nuggets to help it to grow in toxic solutions of the precious metal, reports a paper published online today in Nature Chemical Biology.

The molecule with which the bacteria create the particles could one day be used to collect gold from mine waste, says Frank Reith, an environmental microbiologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia, who works on gold-processing bacteria but was not involved in the latest study.

Reith found some of the first convincing evidence that bacteria thrive on gold particles about ten years ago. At multiple sites, thousands of kilometers apart, he and his team found the bacterium Cupriavidus metallidurans living in biofilms on gold nuggets. The bacteria detoxify dissolved gold by accumulating it in inert nanoparticles inside their cells; Reith and his colleagues have spent the past decade working out how, but have not yet published their complete conclusions.

Some biofilms also contained a second species of bacterium: Delftia acidovarans. Nathan Magarvey, a biochemist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, and his team grew this species in the presence of a gold solution and discovered that the bacterial colonies were surrounded by dark haloes of gold nanoparticles. The researchers concluded that D. acidovarans was somehow creating gold particles outside its cell wall, instead of inside as C. metallidurans does.

Golden genes
Using biochemical and genome analysis, the researchers discovered a set of genes and a chemical metabolite that were responsible for precipitating the gold. Bacteria engineered to lack the genes no longer formed dark haloes, and their growth was stunted in the presence of gold. The team also isolated a chemical produced by the unengineered bacteria that caused gold particles to precipitate out of a solution. The chemical was dubbed delftibactin.

The researchers suggest that the genes they identified are involved in producing delftibactin and shunting it outside the cell. By precipitating gold, D. acidovarans may keep the metal from entering its cells in solution. But Magarvey says that it is possible that D. acidovarans also uses other mechanisms to detoxify gold that breaches its cell walls.

Margarvey's work ?complements ours really well?, says Reith. The two bacterial species might live in symbiosis, with D. acidovarans using delftibactin to diminish the soluble gold to levels that both species can cope with.

A microbe-assisted gold rush might yet happen, says Reith. Delftibactin could be used to produce gold-nanoparticle catalysts for many chemical reactions, or to precipitate gold from waste water produced at mines. ?The idea could be to use a bacterium or metabolite to seed these waste-drop piles, leave them standing for years, and see if bigger particles form,? says Reith.

Magarvey takes those applications seriously: he has secured intellectual-property rights for delftibactin. But he emphasizes that he is most interested in understanding the metabolite's chemical properties. ?I wish I could say we?re up here in Canada growing kilos of gold everyday.?

Report: Assad says Syria can confront aggression

DAMSCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad says his military is capable of confronting any "aggression" that targets the country.

The comments by Assad are the first since an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday that U.S. officials say was targeting a convoy of anti-aircraft weapons inside Syria bound for Hezbollah.

The remarks were reported Sunday by Syrian state TV. It said Assad spoke during a meeting with visiting top Iranian official, Saeed Jalili.

Assad said Syria is capable of facing current challenges and can "confront any aggression" that would target the Syrian people.

Bus crashes into Boston overpass, injuring 33 people

(Reuters) - A bus carrying 42 passengers traveling from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Pennsylvania crashed into a Boston overpass on Saturday night, injuring 33 people, according to emergency officials.

The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. EST on Soldiers Field Road in Boston, according to Boston Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan.

Medical workers transported 34 people to four area hospitals - 30 with minor injuries, three serious, and one life-threatening, Mehigan said. Some people had to be removed through the bus roof, strapped onto backboards, according to the Boston Fire Department's Twitter feed.

Mehigan said the injured included teenagers and adults.

"A number of patients were trapped at some point during the incident," Mehigan said. All the victims had been removed from the bus by about 9:30 p.m. She said the fire department had to remove part of the roof of the private Calvary Coach charter bus to perform the rescues.

ISTANBUL (AP) ? A New York City woman who went missing while vacationing alone in Istanbul was found dead on Saturday, and police detained nine people for questioning in connection with the case, Turkey's state-run news agency said.

Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, was last heard from on Jan. 21, the day she was to fly home. Her disappearance attracted a lot of interest in Turkey, where the disappearance of tourists is rare, and Istanbul police had set up a special unit to find her.

The state-run Anadolu Agency said the body of a woman was discovered Saturday evening near the remnants of ancient city walls and that police later identified it as Sierra's.

The agency did not say what caused her death. But the private NTV television reported that she was stabbed to death, while a private news agency, Dogan, said she had a head wound, suggesting she may have been hit with an object.

Police reached by The Associated Press refused to comment on the case.

Sierra, whose children are 9 and 11, had left for Istanbul on Jan. 7 to explore her photography hobby and made a side trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Munich, Germany. She had originally planned to travel with a friend, but ended up traveling alone when her friend canceled.

She was in regular contact with friends and relatives and was last in touch with her family on Jan. 21, the day she was due back in New York. She told them she would visit Galata Bridge, which spans Istanbul's Golden Horn waterway, to take photos.

The body was found near the bridge and a major road that runs alongside the sea of?Marmara. Here tourists often photograph dozens of tankers waiting to access the Bosporus strait.

On Saturday, police stopped traffic there as forensic police inspected the area.

Anadolu suggested Sierra may have been killed at another location and that her body may have been brought to the site to be hidden there.

At least nine people were detained for questioning in Istanbul, and a police official at the site told journalists that two of them are women. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters about the case.

It was not clear if a Turkish man Sierra had exchanged emails with during her stay in Istanbul was among the nine detainees. He was detained for questioning Friday, then released. Turkish news reports said Sierra had arranged to meet the man on Galata Bridge, but he reportedly told police the meeting never took place.

Sierra's husband, Steven, and her brother, David Jimenez, traveled to Istanbul to help search for her. Sierra's mother, Betzaida Jimenez, said on Saturday that she couldn't talk about the case when reached in New York.

Shortly after Sierra was reported missing, Turkey set up a special police unit which scanned hours of security camera footage in downtown Istanbul in search of clues. A Turkish missing persons association joined the search, handing out flyers with photos of Sierra and urging anyone with information to call police.

While break-ins and petty thievery are common in Istanbul, the vast and crowded city is?considered relatively safe compared to other?major?urban centers. Sierra's death was unlikely to have a significant impact on tourism, a large component of the?Turkish economy.

In 2008, an Italian artist, Pippa Bacca, was raped and killed while hitchhiking to Israel wearing a wedding dress to plead for peace. Her naked body was found in a forest in northwest Turkey. A Turkish man was sentenced to life in prison for the attack. ?
