James Holmes pleads not guilty by reason of insanity

CENTENNIAL, Colo.?An overwhelming number of victims have objected to James Holmes pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, but the judge in the Aurora shooting case told the courtroom today that Holmes? attorneys proved that they can pursue that defense.

?The court finds that good cause has been shown [to enter the plea],? Judge Carlos A. Samour said, adding that Holmes? attorneys had made good-faith effort to talk to mental health experts and further explore the defendant?s mental state in recent weeks. Samour will rule by May 31 whether he accepts Holmes? insanity plea.

Of the victims and family members interviewed by the Arapahoe County District Attorney?s office, 19 told prosecutors they do not think Holmes should be able to plead insanity. Six did not object and three said they had no position, attorney Jacob Edson told the judge.

Pleas are the judge?s discretion?and Edson, while arguing against it, acknowledged as much. "It's up to the court," he said.

But victims? opinions are especially important in Colorado, where the state?s Victims Rights Act requires that prosecutors take victims? opinions into consideration when making monumental trial decisions, such as pursuing the death penalty. Hundreds spoke with the DA?s office over the last several months.

Also complicating the switch to insanity is Colorado statute that says a plea must be made at an arraignment, which was March 12 when the previous judge in the case entered a not-guilty plea on Holmes? behalf. But Samour noted that the Colorado Supreme Court has liberally allowed for defendants to alter their pleas in an effort to afford them fairness.

Defense attorney Daniel King told Samour that, since the arraignment, his team has made substantial progress in speaking with mental illness experts and poring over documents that may shed more light on Holmes' frame of mind the night of the murders.

"The reason we're now ready is we have a diagnosis that is complete. I think it's remarkable we've made the progress we have," King said, adding that his team has needed to dig through nearly 40,000 pages of discovery and evidence.

If his request approved, Holmes will have to undergo lengthy psychological tests to back up his claim. His conversations with his university psychiatrist and a notebook he sent her shortly before the attacks have been ruled privileged information. An insanity plea may remove that confidentiality, and allow the state to administer tests that would delve deeper into Holmes' illness. Defense attorneys have objected to this.

Holmes faces the death penalty in the murders of 12 people in last summer?s shooting spree at a suburban Denver movie theater. Last Tuesday, Holmes? lawyers notified the court they planned to switch the plea. Since Holmes' first hearing in July, attorneys on both sides have repeatedly peppered courtroom argument with their perceptions of his mental state. Two statements from attorneys boil down just how far apart they are:

"Because he wanted to kill all of them, he knew what he was doing," prosecutor Karen Pearson said during Holmes? arraignment.

"Mr. Holmes suffers from a serious mental illness," his defense wrote in a court filing on April 29.

Here?s a look at some milestone events that led up to today?s plea:

? During the March 12 arraignment, William Sylvester, the first judge in the case, entered a not-guilty plea on the defendant?s behalf, as allowed by law. The court expected Holmes to plead not guilty by reason of insanity at the arraignment, but defense attorney Daniel King told Sylvester the defense was trapped in what he called a legal Catch-22: Because they didn?t know whether the prosecution would seek the death penalty, they couldn?t enter an appropriate plea?guilty, not guilty, insane or otherwise. (Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler said in court on April 1 he would seek the death penalty, putting in motion today?s plea.)

? The day before the arraignment, Sylvester, who has since stepped down from the case because his schedule won?t permit a lengthy capital case, advised Holmes what an insanity plea legally entails. In a court notice, Sylvester wrote that the test for insanity applies to a ?person who is so diseased or defective in mind at the time of the commission of the act as to be incapable of distinguishing right from wrong.? But a legally insane person is not someone with ?moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives and kindred evil conditions.?

That?s the key difference, prosecutors allege: While fully sane, Holmes meticulously concocted a ?detailed and complex? plan to slaughter patrons at the Aurora movie theater.

? In the week leading up to the arraignment, Holmes? attorneys publicly announced through a court filing that he offered to plead guilty and avoid trial. But the prosecution not only turned down the request, it chastised Holmes? lawyers, dubbing the proposal a ?calculated attempt? to ?deliberately prejudice the public, witnesses, and victims? against the prosecution?s case.

?[The guilty offer] was not only improper, but grossly improper,? the prosecution said, adding that a guilty plea only proved ?that the defendant knows that he is guilty, the defense attorneys know that he is guilty, and that both of them know that he was not criminally insane.?

? In hearings during the late summer and fall, the defense tried to establish that Holmes? relationship with his university psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton, continued until the July 20 shootings, and possibly afterward. This apparently was an attempt to prove he was still under mental health care?and, thus, his conversations with her are confidential.

Meanwhile, the prosecution asked several law enforcement witnesses during testimony to detail the weapons arsenal Holmes amassed. The array of ammunition and body armor?in addition to the booby-trapping of his apartment?illustrates a sane and well-crafted plot, the prosecution has implied.

Holmes, 25, was a Ph.D. student in neuroscience at the University of Colorado before the shootings during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," the latest Batman movie. He faces 166 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges. The trial is scheduled for February 2014.

But victim Marcus Weaver said there shouldn't even be a trial. Because Holmes already offered a guilty plea, Weaver told Yahoo News at the April 1 hearing that he'd rather not see a months-long trial and that Holmes should and own up to his mistakes.

"It's anguishing. It's frustrating as a victim," Weaver said. "You're talking a whole calendar year before you get to a trial."

He added, ?You have an obligation, if you?re guilty, to plead guilty."

Senator: Obama should 'condemn' IRS targeting

(AP) ? Republicans say the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative political groups was "chilling", and at least one Republican senator called on President Barack Obama to "personally condemn" the actions.

The IRS, an independent agency in the Treasury Department, has already apologized for scrutinizing the tax-exempt status of groups with conservative titles such as "Tea Party" or "Patriot" in their names. And White House spokesman Jay Carney said Friday it was wrong.

But Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Sunday she was disappointed that Obama "hasn't personally condemned this." The president, Collins said, "needs to make crystal clear that this is totally unacceptable."

Collins and other Republicans challenged the tax agency's claim that the practice was initiated by low-level workers.

"I just don't buy that this was a couple of rogue IRS employees," said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. "After all, groups with 'progressive' in their names were not targeted similarly."

If it were just a small number of employees, she said, "then you would think that the high-level IRS supervisors would have rushed to make this public, fired the employees involved, apologized to the American people and informed Congress. None of that happened in a timely way."

The IRS said Friday that it was sorry for what it called the "inappropriate" targeting of the conservative groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status. The agency blamed low-level employees, saying no high-level officials were aware.

But according to a draft of a watchdog's report obtained Saturday by The Associated Press that seemingly contradicts public statements by the IRS commissioner, senior IRS officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups as early as 2011.

The Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration is expected to release the results of a nearly yearlong investigation in the coming week.

Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, said last week that the practice was initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati and was not motivated by political bias.

But on June 29, 2011, Lerner learned at a meeting that groups were being targeted, according to the watchdog's report. At the meeting, she was told that groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriot" or "9/12 Project" in their names were being flagged for additional and often burdensome scrutiny, the report says.

The 9/12 Project is a group started by conservative TV personality Glenn Beck.

Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said "the conclusion that the IRS came to is that they did have agents who were engaged in intimidation of political groups is as dangerous a problem" as the government can have.

He added, "This should send a chill up your spine. ... I don't know where it stops or who is involved."

Congressional Republicans already are conducting several investigations and asked for more.

"This mea culpa is not an honest one," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

After the Associated Press report, Carney said that if the inspector general "finds that there were any rules broken or that conduct of government officials did not meet the standards required of them, the president expects that swift and appropriate steps will be taken to address any misconduct."

Collins said the revelations about the nation's tax agency only contribute to "the profound distrust that the American people have in government. It is absolutely chilling that the IRS was singling out conservative groups for extra review."

The IRS' Lerner said that about 300 groups were singled out for additional review, with about one-quarter scrutinized because they had "tea party" or "patriot" somewhere in their applications.

She said 150 of the cases have been closed and no group had its tax-exempt status revoked, though some withdrew their applications.

Collins appeared on CNN's "State of the Union," Rogers was on "Fox News Sunday" and Issa spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

A thumbnail sketch of NBC's plans for fall season

Some highlights of NBC's moves in its schedule for next season, released on Sunday.

WHAT'S NEW: A lot. The long-struggling network invested heavily in new programming, and has ordered 17 new series for next season. John Malkovich as Blackbeard. James Spader as a wanted fugitive. Dracula brought to life. A cops drama from the guy who made "Law & Order." More supernatural stuff from J.J. Abrams. A cooking show. A quiz show. A home renovation show. If a couple of these make an impression on viewers, NBC will be thrilled.

WHAT'S GONE: The newsmagazine "Rock Center," in a move sure to cause bad blood between NBC's news and entertainment divisions. Matthew Perry's star vehicle "Go On," failing to recreate that "Friends" magic. And about two dozen other sitcoms you never watched.

LIFE SUPPORT: The serial killer drama "Hannibal" has terrible ratings, but NBC had such high hopes for it this spring that executives can't bear to pull the plug. Maybe it's their livers on the line.

STAR POWER: Michael J. Fox is a beloved sitcom actor, respected even more for his dignity in handling Parkinson's Disease. Now he's essentially turning those real-life experiences into a sitcom, where he will play a sportscaster going back to work. Interestingly, NBC gave Sean Hayes a more prominent spot on a Thursday night schedule geared to broad-appeal comedies, perhaps so Fox won't feel the pressure to save the network.

WHAT THEY NEED: Somebody to save the network.

BIG MOVE: "Revolution" to Wednesday nights, where it will no longer have the advantage of a big audience tuning in for "The Voice." ''Chicago Fire" moves to Tuesday. Moving successful shows to new nights is always risky, perhaps even more so for programs at an early stage in their development.

Turkey says it won't be drawn into Syria conflict

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's prime minister vowed Sunday his country won't be drawn into Syria's civil war, despite twin car bombings the government believes were carried out by a group of Turks with close ties to pro-government groups in Syria.

The bombings left 46 people dead and marked the biggest incident of violence across the border since the start of Syria's bloody civil war, raising fears of Turkey being pulled deeper into a conflict that threatens to destabilize the region.

Syria has rejected allegations it was behind the attacks. But Turkish authorities said Sunday they had detained nine Turkish citizens with links to the Syrian intelligence agency in connection with the bombings in the border town of Reyhanli, a hub for Syrian refugees and rebels just across from Syria's Idlib province.

Harsh accusations have flown between Turkey and Syria, signaling a sharp escalation of already high tensions between the two former allies. But Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested that Turkey would not be drawn militarily in retaliation.

He insisted Turkey would "maintain our extreme cool-headedness in the face of efforts and provocations to drag us into the bloody quagmire."

"Those who target Turkey will be held to account sooner or later," he said. "Great states retaliate more powerfully, but when the time is right... We are taking our steps in a coolheaded manner."

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Berlin those detained were linked to a Marxist terrorist group.

Sabah, a Turkish newspaper close to the government, reported Sunday that authorities suspect the leader of a former Marxist group, Mirhac Ural, now believed to be based in Syria, may have revived his group and ordered the attack.

The group, Acilciler, was one of many Marxist groups active in Turkey through the 1970s and 1980s, and was long-rumored to have been formed by the Syrian intelligence agency. Many of its militants allegedly included ethnic Arab Turks belonging to a sect close to Syria's Alawites.

"Some believe that now that relations (with Turkey) have deteriorated again, Syria may have reactivated the group to cause turmoil in Turkey," said Nihat Ali Ozcan, a terrorism expert at the Ankara-based Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey. ?

Guler said a ringleader was among those detained, and more arrests were expected.

"We have determined that some of them were involved in the planning, in the exploration and in the hiding of the vehicles," he said.

Saturday's twin bombings 15 minutes apart damaged some 735 businesses and 120 apartments, leaving smoking hulks of buildings and charred cars. It also wounded dozens of people, including 50 who remained hospitalized Sunday.

Syria and Turkey became adversaries early on during the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad that erupted in March 2011. Since then, Turkey has firmly sided with the Syrian opposition, hosting its leaders along with rebel commanders and providing refuge to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees.

Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said the aim of the attack was to stoke tensions between Turks and Syrian refugees. The town is home to members of Turkey's Arab Alevi community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, while many of the refugees who have fled Syria are Sunni.

On Sunday, hundreds of people marched in the city of Antakya, near Reyhanli, protesting the government for its Syria policies and support for the rebels ? which some believe has exacerbated the conflict in Syria. Turks in Hatay, the southern province where the town is located, complain that the rebels roam freely, disrupting calm in Turkey's border regions.

Witnesses said they saw Turks attacking Syrian registered cars in Reyhanli soon after Saturday's attack and some Syrians avoided going out in the streets. Erdogan asked citizens in Reyhanli to remain calm and not "fall for the provocations."

"The prime minister brought this on to us," said a business owner, who asked to be identified only by his first name, Mehmet. "We have no peace anymore. The Syrians are coming in and out, and we don't know if they are bringing in explosives, taking out arms."

Authorities had so far identified 35 of the dead, three of them as Syrians. Families began burying their loved ones in funerals on Sunday.

Earlier in Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi rejected Turkey's charges, saying that "Syria didn't and will never undertake such acts because our values don't allow us to do this."

He accused Turkey of destabilizing the border areas between the two countries by supporting the rebels, who the regime has labeled terrorists.

"They turned houses of civilian Turks, their farms, their property into a center and passageway for terrorist groups from all over the world," Al-Zoubi said. "They facilitated and still are the passage of weapons and explosives and money and murders to Syria."

Al-Zoubi also branded Erdogan a "killer and a butcher," adding that the Turkish leader "has no right to build his glory on the blood of the Turkish and Syrian people."

Tensions had earlier flared between the Syrian regime and Turkey after shells fired from Syria landed on the Turkish side, killing five Turks, and prompting Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. to send two batteries of Patriot air defense missiles each to protect their NATO ally.

Davutoglu said his country would hold those responsible for the bombings but had no immediate plans to involve its NATO allies.

The attacks come just a little over a week after Israel escalated its role in the Syria conflict by striking suspected shipments of advanced Iranian weapons in Syria.

Erdogan is flying to the U.S. for talks with President Barack Obama next week. In the wake of the car bombs, both men could come under greater pressure to take action.

"It comes down to an existential struggle," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha center. "Those who oppose Assad really have to show that they mean it now."

The U.S. has provided humanitarian aid to the Syrian opposition, but has been reluctant to provide military aid, in part because al-Qaida-linked militants are becoming increasingly influential in the armed opposition.

Last week, Erdogan alleged that Syria has been using chemical weapons, delivering them on at least 200 missiles, though he provided no evidence. Syria has denied using chemical weapons.

Obama has portrayed the use of chemicals by the regime as a "red line" that would have harsh consequences, but has said he needs more time to investigate allegations.

In another potentially destabilizing element, Israel signaled last week that it will keep striking at shipments of advanced Iranian weapons that might be bound for Hezbollah. Syria has traditionally be a conduit for Iranian weapons to Hezbollah.

Earlier this month, Israel struck twice at what Israeli officials said were shipments of advanced Iranian missiles near Damascus. In response, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said this week that Syria is expected to deliver "game-changing" weapons to his militia. If more than empty rhetoric, this would likely provoke more Israeli strikes.

Woman pulled alive from rubble of Bangladesh factory

By Rafiqur Rahman

SAVAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - A young Bangladeshi woman who spent 17 days buried alive under a collapsed garments factory was rescued on Friday when astonished workmen heard a voice calling "save me, save me" from the rubble.

Pale, drawn but seemingly unhurt, Reshma Begum was cut from the ruins and hoisted onto a stretcher to wild cheers in scenes that captivated a nation which had long given up hope of finding any more survivors.

When the eight-storey building collapsed on April 24, Begum was trapped in a lightless, cell-like nook - alone, but alive. She managed to survive by taking sips from bottles of water buried with her.

"To save water I used to drink only a small quantity," Begum, 19, told Somoy television from her hospital bed.

The 45-minute rescue was broadcast live on television. Cameras captured hope lighting up the faces of rescue workers peering into the hole, before Begum was carried out.

For a moment she was shown with her head lolling to the side, as if unconscious. Emergency workers placed an oxygen mask on her face and loaded her into an ambulance that sped away with its doors open.

Hours earlier, crews had pulled the 1,000th dead body from the wreckage.

By the end of the day, a spokesman at the army control room coordinating the operation said the number of people confirmed to have been killed had reached 1,050. It was the world's worst industrial accident since Bhopal in India in 1984.

"A MIRACLE"

Major Moazzem Hossain said Begum had been discovered by chance after army engineers searching for more bodies began cutting through concrete beams, inadvertently allowing a ray of sunlight to pour into the space where she had been stuck.

Begum began waving an aluminum curtain rail through the gap to attract attention and cried out "Save me! Save me!".

"We told her the whole country is with you, we will never leave this place until we rescue you," Hossain told Reuters. "How can she have survived for 17 days? It must have been a miracle."

Mohammad Rubel Rana, a workman who had been cutting iron rods at the site said he had alerted rescue crews after hearing her cries.

"I heard a faint voice saying 'Save me, Save me'," Rana told Reuters television. "She was given water, biscuits and oxygen."

A doctor at the Combined Military Hospital in Savar where Begum was treated told reporters she was stable but needed rest.

Good news has been in short supply in Bangladesh, which is simultaneously reeling from the aftermath of the disaster and its worst bout of violent since independence in 1971 ahead of elections due early next year.

A series of deadly incidents at factories has focused global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh's booming garment industry. Eight people were killed in a fire at a factory this week, which an industry association said on Friday may have been started deliberately.

About 2,500 people were rescued from Rana Plaza, in the industrial suburb of Savar, 20 miles northwest of Dhaka, including many injured, but there is no official estimate of the numbers still missing.

The disaster, believed to have been triggered when generators were started up during a blackout, has put the spotlight on Western retailers who use the impoverished South Asian nation as a source of cheap goods.

Nine people have been arrested in connection with the disaster, including the building's owner and bosses of the factories it housed.

Kate Upton is 'so proud' of her boobs

Kate Upton appears on the June cover of Vogue, and in the interview inside, discusses her curves and career.

Kate Upton graces the cover of the June issue of Vogue, and she's not afraid to discuss her shapely figure.

Speaking of the Florida city where she moved to get modeling work, Upton told the magazine, "In Miami, boobs are fantastic. I was so proud of them. I was so excited. Are you kidding?"

The curves were new to Upton. Her sister Christie tells the magazine, "She was stick-thin and flat for the longest time. Sometimes she?d stuff her bra. We all did ? with tissue paper or socks."

Upton tells Vogue she developed at age 15, and also shot up to five feet ten. She was also an equestrian, winning American Paint Horse Association world championships before turning 17.

The model, just 20, has been criticized for not being as stick-thin as others in the fashion world, and responded to that in the interview. "It?s kind of funny to think, 'Oh, wow, the news is talking about whether I?m fat or not,' " she said.

"The things that they?re rejecting are things that I can?t change," Upton said. "I can?t change my bra size. They?re natural! I can work out and I can stay healthy and motivated, but I can?t change some things. I really just live my life. I love my body. It?s what God gave me!"

Although she's on a magazine cover herself, Upton says she wasn't a purchaser of them as a kid.

"I didn?t buy the magazines that had models on the covers, because I didn?t know them," she said. Upton herself uses social media, such as Twitter and Vine, to try and ensure she's not one of those unknowable models. "I think (social media) kind of gives me, as a model, a personality that people can connect with."

The June issue of Vogue goes on sale May 21.

96% Blancanieves

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (13) | Fresh (45) | Rotten (2)

Most films are experiences to be ignored or at best forgotten. "Blancanieves" is a little classic to be treasured.

It is a full-bodied silent film of the sort that might have been made by the greatest directors of the 1920s, if such details as the kinky sadomasochism of this film's evil stepmother could have been slipped past the censors.

Blancanieves, which won 10 Goyas (Spain's equivalent of the Oscars) and was a smash hit in its native Spain, has traces of a kinky undertone and an uncommon willingness to embrace the darkness inherent in this fairy tale.

As if bewitched, the legend of Snow White is transferred to Seville in the early twentieth century and transformed into high melodrama.

Sensuous, mischievous, hotblooded retelling of the old Teutonic fairy tale.

This gorgeous silent film is an unexpected gift from the gods of pure cinema.

The story might be familiar, but Berger's film is so beautifully shot and so wonderfully scored - and so distinctively Spanish - that it stands as its own film.

Blancanieves holds to the structure, but not strictures, of the source fairy tale.

A new, purely silent movie from Spain that never once speaks and doesn't need to speak. What's more, it seems to get the infinite possibilities of silence, and how much passion can come from it.

Berger's film doesn't show loyalty to any traditional version of Snow White. Berger's Blancanieves takes a darker approach, which seems appropriate.

A completely enchanting fairy tale about the vicissitudes of fate, in live action and glorious black and white.

The fun in the Spanish "Blancanieves" is the way it plays with our expectations.

May not have much depth to its characters or particular surprise, but its lovely depiction of family's ability to harm and mend has the flair of flamenco and the sorrow of opera.

No, "Blancanieves" isn't subtle, but it's an unforgettable time at the movies.

Inspired filmmaking steeped in the imagery of silent film history, a dark Iberian strain of Roman Catholicism and the magic of fairy tales.

... lusty and heartfelt, fiery flamenco and spirited country jig. Don't go expecting a Disney-fied fable. Berger seasons with S&M and the kind of macabre touches you'd expect in vintage Browning or Bunuel.

If not for some faintly disturbing imagery and a pleasingly feminist heroine, you could mistake this for a movie actually made in the 1920s (and even those two factors weren't utterly unknown then).

A loving tribute to European silent films of the 1920s; a reminder that cinema need not be constrained by words.

By the time the film arrives at its grand theatrical finale, you're almost prepared for Berger's last great twist. Almost.

this beautifully shot and imaginatively told fairy tale should be seen my many, but only a few will likely get to enjoy it. This is a shame for the audience it is intended for.

This film is simply gorgeous, pure beauty on film, a vision that leaves you breathless and reeling.

Much of the film's emotion is conveyed by Alfonso de Vilallonga's music, which celebrates Spain with uptempo guitar and flamenco when it isn't tipping its hat to Bernard Herrmann during a scene inspired by Hitchcock.

Kristen Wiig's 6 best 'SNL' characters

TV

Image: Kristen Wiig

NBC

Kristen Wiig as Gilly on "Saturday Night Live."

It's been a long year since Kristen Wiig ditched "Saturday Night Live" for Hollywood movie stardom, but at long last she's finally coming back! The star is returning this weekend to bring the funny back ... er ... host the show that made her famous.

During her seven seasons, she was responsible for some of "SNL's" most memorable characters, a few of which she will hopefully be resurrecting during her guest appearance, as the episode's promos hint.

We'll have to wait until Saturday night to see which oldies but goodies are resurrected, but fingers crossed these gems are allowed to shine again.

Penelope

We've probably all met a Penelope at some point in our lives: the person who has to one-up everyone else in the room, even if it's just to celebrate the fact that her misery is more miserable than yours. Her divorce is worse than yours. Your relatives came over on the Mayflower? Well, Penelope's came over a month before yours did on the "Aprilflower." If the conversation has nothing to do with her, Penelope has to interject and get the spotlight, even if she has to tell a few lies to make sure her story is better than yours.

Target Lady

Wiig brought Target Lady into viewers' lives nine times during her "SNL" run. This superstar employee loves everything: the sound her register makes, Beyonce, even her restless leg syndrome. She annoyingly comments on what you buy, how you pay and who you're shopping with, but you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who enjoys her job as much as Target Lady does.

Shana

At first glance, Shana seems like a bombshell, with her long red hair, breathy voice and tight outfits. But after spending a few minutes with her you'll see that she's really a burping, bad-mannered chick with a laugh that sounds like a hyena. With her Shana skits, Wiig taught that you certainly can't judge a book by its cover.

Judy Grimes

When "Weekend Update" needs to hear from a travel expert, Judy Grimes, a fast-talking, nervous travel writer, makes her appearance. Judy manages to cram an astonishing number of words into a sentence, most of which are her catchphrase "Just kidding." She isn't able to shake her case of the nerves, no matter how many times she appears on "Weekend Update," which doesn't make her that great of a travel expert, but certainly makes her fun to watch.

Surprise Party Sue

If you want to keep something a secret, don't tell Sue. She loves to be in on a surprise but, unfortunately, can't contain her excitement and always ends up ruining the plan. Even if she tries to stop herself from spilling the beans about a surprise party or a friend's plan to propose, she just can't control herself. She tries everything to keep quiet, even resorting to using a lobster's claw to clamp her mouth shut, but she simply can't be contained.

Gilly

One of Wiig's most iconic characters, Gilly, is a little girl with frizzy hair and a strange smile who likes to play jokes and cause trouble at her school. Whether she has stabbed her classmate with a fork or told her teacher to "shove it," she doesn't feel remorseful. In fact, after uttering her catchphrase "Sorry!" she likes to get up and do her signature dance while her classmates get blamed for her crimes. Gilly became so popular that "SNL" once gave her her very own Christmas special.

"Saturday Night Live" airs at 11:30 p.m. Saturday on NBC.

Obama's EPA nominee stalled as Republicans boycott vote

By Valerie Volcovici and Roberta Rampton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican senators boycotted a confirmation vote on President Barack Obama's pick to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday, saying they were "completely unsatisfied" with answers provided by Gina McCarthy on several topics.

This was the latest tactic in a series of procedural moves by Republicans that have made it difficult for Obama to get his second-term cabinet in place - and achieved what some say is a new record in the number of written questions asked to a nominee.

All eight Republicans on the Senate Environment Committee refused to participate in a scheduled vote on McCarthy, effectively stalling her nomination before it could advance to the next stage - a full Senate vote.

The White House responded with outrage. "The obstruction is reaching new levels of absurdity," Dan Pfeiffer, a top advisor to Obama, said on the social networking site Twitter. Republicans have argued that various EPA rules have hurt jobs and the coal industry because they cost too much to implement, and have accused the agency of not being transparent in its policies.

McCarthy was in charge of developing many of those regulations in her previous job at the EPA. She is well-known by lawmakers and her nomination was applauded by many industries regulated by the EPA.

David Vitter of Louisiana, the ranking Republican on the Senate Environment committee, told reporters the boycott was not related to McCarthy's qualifications but to her refusal to answer questions about transparency within the agency.

Republicans asked her more than 1,000 questions after her official nomination hearing.

In contrast, Republicans asked Lisa Jackson, Obama's first EPA administrator, 118 questions after her nomination hearing, said a Democratic official familiar with the nomination process.

Lawmakers asked Jack Lew, now Treasury Secretary, a total of 462 written questions after his confirmation hearing earlier this year.

"Part of the goal is to wear down and make untenable the nomination," said George Washington University's Sarah Binder, an expert on Congress, who said in an interview that Obama has had a difficult time getting Senate approval for his cabinet choices compared to previous presidents.

Although the Democratic majority controls the Senate and its committees, congressional rules give some procedural advantages to the minority Republicans enabling them to stall or block legislation and nominees.

The boycott of McCarthy's vote comes a day after Republican senators used an obscure procedural rule to delay a scheduled committee vote on Obama's nominee for labor secretary, Thomas Perez.

The nomination of Ernest Moniz, Obama's pick to head the Energy Department, has also stalled over a dispute with a South Carolina senator about the government's management of a nuclear waste disposal project in the state.

Earlier this year, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan also had tough work getting Senate confirmation.

CARPER: 'ABOVE AND BEYOND'

McCarthy was a state environmental official in Connecticut and Massachusetts before joining the EPA in 2009. She was the top environmental enforcer for Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, when he was governor of Massachusetts.

Environmental groups called the Republican tactics "new lows" given her qualifications and popularity.

"By any measure, Gina McCarthy deserves to be confirmed, but Republicans on this committee are apparently more concerned with scoring political points than protecting public health," said Gene Karpinski, president of the League of Conservation Voters.

Democratic Senator Tom Carper of Delaware said McCarthy had gone "above and beyond the requirements of a nominee" in answering more than 1,000 questions and meeting with almost half the 100-member Senate.

Wyoming Republican John Barrasso said the delay in McCarthy's nomination did not pose an operational problem for the agency, calling acting administrator Bob Perciasepe was "more than qualified" to run the EPA in the meantime.

In their letter to Boxer, Republican Senators noted that environment and public works committee Democrats, when in the minority, staged a similar boycott in 2003 of EPA nominee Michael Leavitt, forcing a vote to be rescheduled. Leavitt was ultimately confirmed.

1 week left in Florida?s stone crab season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? There?s only one week left in Florida?s stone crab season.

The commercial and recreational harvests of stone crab claws close May 15. The next season begins Oct. 15.

Commercial fishermen have complained that the current stone crab season has been largely a bust.

A poor stone crab harvest drives up the price of the seafood delicacy, so some restaurants that regularly feature stone crabs have been promoting other dishes instead.

It?s not clear what might be driving down stone crab harvests.

The National Aquarium in Washington to close

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Aquarium says it will close its Washington branch in the fall.

Officials announced Thursday that renovations at the Department of Commerce building that the aquarium has called home since 1932 make the move necessary.

Aquarium officials say they must leave by March 2014, but the aquarium will close Sept. 30 and begin moving the 1,500 animals housed there to the National Aquarium in Baltimore and other facilities.

The National Aquarium, Washington, DC, was established in 1873 and opened in 1885. The aquarium's board is exploring ways to maintain a presence in Washington.

(AP) ? The International Space Station has a radiator leak in its power system. The outpost's commander calls the situation serious, but not life-threatening.

The six-member crew on Thursday noticed white flakes of ammonia leaking out of the station. Ammonia runs through multiple radiator loops to cool the station's power system. NASA said the leak is increasing from one previously leaking loop that can be bypassed if needed. NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs said engineers are working on rerouting electronics just in case the loop shuts down. The Earth-orbiting station has backup systems.

Space station Commander Chris Hadfield of Canada tweeted that the problem, while serious, was stabilized. Officials will know more Friday.

The space station always has enough emergency escape ships for the crew, but there are no plans to use them.

Emboldened by military gains, Assad regime shows resilience

During more than two years of a debilitating civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has consistently defied predictions of an imminent downfall, and his regime is showing remarkable resilience.

The Syrian Army has scored tactical successes against rebel forces across the north, west, and south of the country, dismaying the opposition and possibly postponing a planned rebel ?spring offensive" to storm the regime stronghold of central Damascus.

?Bashar?s game plan is to shoot it out till the end, bring out the worst in his enemies, and rally minorities around him in a regime redoubt,? says Andrew Tabler, a Syria expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

It is a plan that for now appears to be working, as ?the end? becomes harder to see. President Assad has managed to retain the loyalty of most of his Alawite community, the heterodox Shiite sect that forms the backbone of the regime, as well as other religious minorities who have watched with trepidation the rise of extremist rebel factions, such as the Al Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra, which is calling for a state governed under sharia law after Assad?s ouster.

Assad also can rely on the so-far unwavering support of international and regional backers ? Russia, Iran, Shiite elements inside Iraq, and the Lebanese Shiite militant organization Hezbollah.

"Syria has real friends in the region and the world who will not allow Syria to fall into the hands of America or Israel or the Takfiris," Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah warned the Syrian opposition in a televised speech this week. Takfiris is a name given to some extremist Sunni Muslim jihadists who treat other religions as apostate.

Although Mr. Nasrallah has admitted that some members of his organization are defending Shiite villages in Syria, he hinted that Assad?s Lebanese and Iranian allies could intervene more heavily in the future.

?What do you imagine would happen in the future if things deteriorate in a way that requires the intervention of the forces of resistance in this battle?? he asked.

Meanwhile, the bickering political opposition still has not managed to form a united and coherent front able to win over fence-sitting Syrians and inspire the full commitment of the international community. The dozens of armed opposition groups, while motivated in their struggle, remain generally ill-equipped and increasingly split along ideological lines and rivals for funds and weapons.

?We have a problem with Jabhat al-Nusra because some of them used to be killers and thieves and then suddenly they became [religious] fanatics overnight because they get weapons and money [from foreign sponsors],? says Abu Assy, a Syrian opposition activist living in hiding in Lebanon.

THE COMPLICATED ROAD TO DAMASCUS

A diplomatic report prepared in early April for a European government noted that the Assad regime had conducted a counteroffensive in the Damascus area to prevent rebel forces from reaching positions from which they could launch a final push on the city center.

?According to regime reports, they [the Syrian Army] have achieved such progress that the rebel forces cannot launch an attack on the [city] center, but other observations do not support that the tactical situation has changed,? the report says.

However, since the diplomatic cable was written, government forces have seized the town of Utaibe, east of Damascus, severing a key weapons supply line from Jordan to rebel groups deployed around the southern and eastern edges of the city. The Syrian Army also seized the town of Jdeidet al-Fadel, southwest of Damascus, that sits on the highway linking the Syrian capital to the Golan Heights.

The capture of the town, in which up to 100 people were reportedly killed, appears to have frustrated the rebels' plan to drive northeast from the town of Quneitra on the Golan Heights toward Damascus in an attempt to get in position for a final push on the city center.

SWEEPING SUCCESS

In western Syria, the Syrian military, accompanied by Hezbollah fighters, has launched an offensive to retake a string of rebel-held villages just west of Qusayr, a town lying between the border with north Lebanon and Homs, Syria?s third-largest city. The capture of the villages leaves the Syrian Army well placed to mount an attack against Qusayr itself, a mainly Sunni town of some 30,000 residents that has been in rebel hands since February 2012.

Qusayr lies beside the main highway that links Damascus to Homs and on to the port of Tartous on the Mediterranean and the mountainous hinterland that is home to the bulk of Syria?s Alawite community. If Qusayr is recaptured by the regime, the military will be in a strong position to seize the last two quarters of Homs that lie in rebel hands.

Opposition activists said Thursday that the Syrian Army had seized Wadi al-Sayeh in central Homs, effectively cutting off the rebel-held districts of Khaldiyah and the Old City from each other. If Homs falls under regime control once more, the Syrian Army could then focus on regaining control over a stretch of highway between Damascus and Homs where rebels have a strong presence.

In the northern Idlib Province, the Syrian Army recently broke a months-long siege of the Wadi Deif military base outside the town of Maarrat al-Numan by outflanking rebel factions.

Still, neither side is strong enough to decisively overcome the other, analysts say. The Assad regime has bought itself time by rolling back some rebel gains and demonstrated a determination to prevail. But the international outcry over alleged chemical weapons use and the related mounting pressure on the Obama administration to intervene more forcefully suggest that the Assad regime could face tougher challenges in the months ahead.

"He has no choice but to keep fighting," says Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma and author of the influential Syria Comment blog. "This is the unfortunate dilemma. For both sides, this is a zero-sum conflict."
