Affordable Branding Strategies for Small Business Owners ? Small ...

affordable branding online banner advertisingAdvertising dollars for a small business are as crucial as time and employees.? They need to work, and work right away.? Find affordable branding strategies for small businesses can be difficult? With small businesses, each advertising dollar needs to be spent as effectively as possible to generate new leads.? Often times, the branding and awareness type of advertising that larger companies use on traditional mediums like radio and television are a completely out of reach expense for small business owners.

With budgets being smaller and generally needing to produce new leads rather than just brand a company, any sort of branding campaigns for small business need to be done with a low cost.

At TLG we are asked the question often, ?how can I brand my small business??.? It is a great question, and after a feeling out process to determine advertising budget and available resources we often settle on a combination of print and online banner advertising.? For the purposes on this article, we?ll talk specifically about the online banner advertising.

We?ve discussed the benefits of online advertising for small businesses thoroughly on this blog, but display advertising is a topic that we have not covered in as much detail.? An online banner advertisement is a form of advertising where a business places a flash banner (.swf) or image advertisement on a website.? This type of advertisement is beneficial because it can display all kinds of information, and contain animation or multiple different messages to attract the website visitor to click on the ad.? Typically display advertising is targeted based on the relevancy of the content on the page, compared to the products or services that the small business is offering.

There are a number of ways to utilize online banner advertising to brand your small business, but the best method (and TLG?s preferred method) is via Google Adwords.? Google Adwords is the dominant player in Search Based advertising, but has even more control, and a wider reach using their display network.? Google?s Display Advertising Network allows small businesses to place ads on just about any news site, blog or website that produces valuable, shared content.? It?s a great way to brand you business to a core audience, that might not necessarily be aware that your company of products exist.

affordable small business brandingAdditionally, the Google Display Network is great for small businesses because it levels the playing field regarding advertising budgets.? Sure, most small businesses have only a fraction of the advertising budget of a large corporation (like Albertsons shown on the right), but the placements that a company Albertsons receives are just as available to your small business.? Maybe not for the same amount of frequency or volume, but they are still available to utilize.

Depending on the geographic reach of where your small business pulls customers from (local, regional, national) there are a number of setting options for geographic targeting that your display advertising campaign can use to reach your audience.? Once you have determined a geographic reach, it a simple matter of editing the campaigns demographic, topics and interests to ensure that you are reaching just your perfect, core audience.? For example, let?s say that you own a health & nutrition supplement retail store, and that one distinct aspect of your store is that you also sell massage chairs.? From a branding perspective, it is important to accomplish two goals; one that you sell health supplements, and the other that you have a good selection of massage chairs for sale.? These two products while having similar types of customers will require two distinct branding campaigns for online banner advertising.

The first of the messages is to promote the health products and supplements.? Individuals will have lots of options on where and how (online, wholesale, retail) they purchase their supplements.? Convenience, selection and prices are going to be an important influence on why customers will choose one supplement store over another.? So for a online branding campaign, it will be important to limit the geographic reach of the campaign to just a few miles around the business, and to make sure to target precise interests in health and fitness.

The second of the branding messages can have much different targeting in order to produce results.? Since the massage chairs are expensive, and may take multiple impressions and trials before purchase, and because there are not nearly as many retails stores that carry the product, this will mean that the audience to target will be much smaller.? For this campaign, a wider-geographic targeting area is acceptable, and the interests and topics targeting can focus more on back pain, chiropractic and pain relief.? In addition to the targeting being different, the images within the advertising and the included messaging will be vastly different as well.

By utilizing online banner advertisements to brand your business, you can brand both the general (health products & supplements) about your small business and the specific (massage chairs) while reaching only your core audience.? Controlling costs and targeting the perfect market will ensure a successful online banner advertising campaign from a branding perspective.

Optical materials: Light's magnetism shows its true colors

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Light is an oscillating wave of electric and magnetic fields. The way the electric field component interplays with the atoms in a material largely determines how light interacts with matter. With visible light, however, the influence of the magnetic component is usually much smaller. Arseniy Kuznetsov at the A*STAR Data Storage Institute, Singapore, and co?workers have now created tiny spheres of silicon that can strongly interact with the magnetic field of visible-wavelength light1. These engineered 'magnetic materials' enable new ways of controlling light at the nanoscale.

Relative permeability is a measure of a substance's ability to support a magnetic field. Most optical materials have a permeability approximately equal to one. A more diverse choice, however, would open the door to a whole host of novel optical devices. Negative permeability, for example, could be used to create high-resolution lenses and even invisibility cloaks. As no such materials exist in nature, scientists have started to develop metamaterials, which are artificial structures engineered to interact with light in a desired way. Kuznetsov and co-workers have shown that nanoscale engineering provides a way of tuning the magnetic properties of silicon nanoparticles.

The researchers fired a high-intensity laser at a silicon wafer, which blasted off spheres of silicon with diameters between 100 and 200 nanometers. The separation between the spheres was large enough that the researchers could see them individually under an optical microscope. They could also see that the nanoparticles scattered light of all colors in the rainbow, from red to violet.

In a theoretical analysis, Kuznetsov and co-workers showed that the optical response resulted from incoming light generating a circular electric field, or displacement current, in the sphere. This, in turn, supported an oscillating magnetic field in the middle of the particle -- a so-called magnetic dipole (see image). "We have experimentally demonstrated that silicon nanoparticles can have strong electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectrum," explains Kuznetsov. "The advantage of our approach is that it is free of energy loss because the modes are not related to real electron currents."

The properties of the dipole were dependent on the size of the particle, so particles of different sizes scattered light of different colors. The team predicts that more sophisticated fabrication techniques will soon enable greater control over a nanoparticle's size and shape, thus enabling selective tuning of its optical properties. "Our future research will target possible applications of these nanoparticles and the realization of novel nanodevices for light-on-a-chip integration," says Kuznetsov.

The A*STAR-affiliated researchers contributing to this research are from the Data Storage Institute.

In probing mysteries of glass, researchers find a key to toughness

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

In a paper published online Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Communications, a Yale University team and collaborators propose a way of predicting whether a given glass will be brittle or ductile ? a desirable property typically associated with metals like steel or aluminum ? and assert that any glass could have either quality.

Ductility refers to a material's plasticity, or its ability to change shape without breaking.

"Most of us think of glasses as brittle, but our finding shows that any glass can be made ductile or brittle," said Jan Schroers, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Yale, who led the research with Golden Kumar, a professor at Texas Tech University. "We identified a special temperature that tells you whether you form a ductile or brittle glass."

The key to forming a ductile glass, they said, is cooling it fast. Exactly how fast depends on the nature of the specific glass.

Focusing on a new group of glasses known as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) ? metal alloys, or blends, that can be extremely pliable yet also as strong as steel ? researchers studied the effect of a so-called critical fictive temperature (CFT) on the glasses' mechanical properties at room temperature.

When forming from liquid, there is a temperature at which glass becomes too viscous for reconfiguration and freezes. This temperature is called the glass transition temperature. Based on experiments with three representative bulk metallic glasses, the researchers said there is also, for each distinct alloy, a critical temperature that determines the brittleness or plasticity of the glass. This is the CFT.

Researchers said it's possible to categorize glasses in two groups ? those that will be brittle because in liquid form their CFT is above the glass transition temperature, and those that will be ductile, because in liquid form their CFT is below the glass transition temperature.

They previously thought a liquid's chemical composition alone would determine whether a glass would be brittle or ductile.

"That's not the case," Schroers said. "We can make any glass theoretically ductile or brittle. And it is the critical fictive temperature which determines how experimentally difficult it is to make a ductile glass. That is the major contribution of this work."

The finding applies theoretically to all glasses, not metallic glasses only, he said.

"A glass can have completely different properties depending on the rate at which you cool it," Schroers said. "If you cool it fast, it is very ductile, and if you cool it slow it?s very brittle. We anticipate that our finding will contribute to the design of ductile glasses, and in general contribute to a deeper understanding of glass formation."

Costs Of Private Jet Hire | Jet Charter Spain

If you sick of the hassles involved with delays, cancellations and diversions of aircrafts, then you can just add more money and opt for a private jet hire. However, this is not equal to the charges of a regular aircraft, but still the money will be well worth it as this is a very good option for those who are looking for smooth traveling along with time flexibility and luxury. There has been a surge in various private jet operators in the past decade in the domestic aviation industry. Since then, the industry has played it safe by providing great deals and offers to frequent travelers and jetsetters. You might be surprised to see that the prices of jets now are much lesser than those ten years back.

(AP) ? World powers, fearful of scuttling negotiations beginning this week with Iran, are offering the Islamic republic some small new sanctions relief in return for curbing its nuclear program. But officials warned Monday that it's unlikely that any compromise will be reached soon.

Negotiators set low expectations for the latest round of high-level diplomatic talks to begin Tuesday in Kazakhstan's largest city ? the first since last June's meeting in Moscow that threatened to derail delicate efforts to convince Iran to stop enriching uranium to a level close to that used for nuclear warheads.

The stakes couldn't be higher: the Obama administration is pushing for diplomacy to solve the impasse but has not ruled out the possibility of military intervention in Iran to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon. And Israel has threatened it will use all means to stop Iran from being able to building a bomb, potentially as soon as this summer, raising the specter of a possible Mideast war.

Tehran maintains it is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and medical isotopes, and insists it has a right to do so under international law. It has signaled it does not intend to stop, despite harsh international sanctions on its oil and financial sectors, and U.N. nuclear inspectors last week confirmed Iran has begun a major upgrade of its program at the country's main uranium enrichment site.

The clerical regime's refusal frustrates the international community, which has responded by slapping Iran with a host of economic sanctions that U.S. officials said have, among other things, cut the nation's daily oil output by 1 million barrels and slashed its employment rate. But, in a twist, negotiators now hope that easing some of the sanctions will make Tehran more agreeable to halting production of 20 percent enriched uranium ? the highest grade of enrichment that Iran has acknowledged and one that experts say could be turned into warhead grade in a matter of months.

Negotiators from the six world powers ? United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ? also want Iran to suspend enrichment in its underground Fordo nuclear facility, and to ship its stockpile of high-grade uranium out of the country.

"We are pleased that they have come together for talks because it's been eight months since Moscow. We wanted to come together for talks earlier than this," said Michael Mann, spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is leading the negotiations. "What's important to us is that they engage in these negotiations and take seriously what we've put on the table.

"No one is expecting everyone to walk out of here with a deal, but if we can have some forward momentum and they can show a willingness to take a confidence-building step, that's very important," Mann told reporters on Monday. He described the world powers' newest gambit as "a good offer" but declined to say what it would include.

A senior U.S. official at the talks said some sanctions relief would be part of the offer to Iran but also refused to detail it. The new relief is part of a package that the U.S. official said included "substantive changes ? whether you'd call them super-substantial, I'll leave to history." The official acknowledged reports earlier this month that sanctions would be eased to allow Iran's gold trade to progress, but would neither confirm nor deny they are included in the new relief offer, and spoke only on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic talks more candidly.

But at the same time, the senior U.S. official also noted the possibility that Iran would face new pressures if it fails to comply with international concerns. That could include toughening the impact of the sanctions already in place by enforcing them more strictly, or imposing new sanctions altogether as Iran moves forward with its program.

Western powers have hoped that the Iranian public would suffer under sanctions so badly that the government would feel a moral obligation to slow its nuclear program. The U.S. official attributed the decline in Iranian currency, the rial, and the decrease in oil production to Western sanctions.

Iran has been unimpressed with earlier offers by the powers to provide it with medical isotopes and lift sanctions on spare parts for civilian airliners, and new bargaining chips that Tehran sees as minor are likely to be snubbed as well. Iran insists, as a starting point, that world powers must recognize the republic's right to enrich uranium.

In a sign that Tehran is in no hurry to reach a compromise, Iran's foreign minister has no plans to meet with officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency Tuesday when he visits Vienna to attend an unrelated conference. Diplomats in Vienna suggested the decision by Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi reflects a deadlock on the agency's attempts to probe Tehran's atomic work. IAEA officials recently suggested related talks needed to pause after dragging on without results. The diplomats demanded anonymity because their information was confidential.

Still, last week, Salehi spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the Almaty talks could provide an important "opportunity" so long as the two sides were dealing with each other as equals and making offers of "same level, same weight."

"We will offer ways for removing possible concerns and ambiguities to show our goodwill, if Western countries, especially the U.S., fully recognize the nuclear rights of countries, which shows their goodwill," Mehmanparast told reporters in Tehran.

In London, Secretary of State John Kerry said an Iran with nuclear weapons was "simply unacceptable" and warned the time limit for a diplomatic solution was running out.

"As we have repeatedly made clear, the window for a diplomatic solution simply cannot remain open forever," said Kerry, on his first international tour as America's top diplomat. "But it is open today. It is open now and there is still time but there is only time if Iran makes the decision to come to the table and to negotiate in good faith. We are prepared to negotiate in good faith, in mutual respect, in an effort to avoid whatever terrible consequences could follow failure and so the choice really is in the hands of the Iranians. And we hope they will make the right choice."

An analysis released Monday by the International Crisis Group concluded that the web of international sanctions have become so entrenched in Iran's political and economic systems that they cannot be easily lifted piece-by-piece. It found that Tehran's clerical regime has begun adapting its policy to the sanctions, despite their crippling effect on the Iranian public. Doing so, the analysis concluded, has divided the public's anger "between a regime viewed as incompetent and an outside world seen as uncaring."

"As far as Iran is concerned, it is too late to reverse course. The massive sanctions regime is in place, warts and all, and not about to be removed," the analysis concluded. It recommended that the world powers "devise a package of incentives, including some less than complete degree of relief, that is politically as well as legally achievable and that genuinely addresses Iranian concerns."

Several diplomats in Almaty said any major breakthrough in the negotiations likely won't come until after Iran's presidential elections in June ? especially if the world powers refuse to offer anything that Tehran can use to show as some kind of major concession by the West.

'Just make the cuts'

Washington is in panic mode over the so-called sequester?automatic, across-the-board spending cuts set to be triggered March 1 if Congress and the White House can't reach a deficit reduction deal. Just days before the federal budget will be forced to shave less than 3 percent from its annual budget, politicos from President Barack Obama to Republican House Speaker John Boehner are prophesying Armageddon.

But while most lawmakers flail through the nation's capital as if their hair just caught fire, a coalition of conservative groups are urging lawmakers to stop worrying and learn to love the sequester.

Americans for Prosperity, for example, is one of a few organizations hailing the looming budget cuts as a potential victory. The group, backed by billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch, has dispatched members from its network of activists to visit 10 lawmakers' state offices in Florida, North Carolina, Arkansas and Minnesota urging them to let the across-the-board cuts take their course. The group is also circulating a petition arguing that sequestration is "not enough" and plans to release online ads.

"Just make the cuts," AFP President Tim Phillips told Yahoo News in an interview. "These are modest cuts. It's about 2 cents roughly on every dollar of federal spending."

Meanwhile, AFP is urging its 2.3 million members to flood congressional officers with letters calling on them not to make a deal to avoid the cuts. "Thankfully, Congress and the President have already agreed to cut $85 billion from the budget this year," the form letter reads. "That?s not enough but it?s a good first step. I urge you not to undo those spending cuts."

The sequestration plan, crafted in 2011 as part of deficit reduction negotiations to encourage both Republicans and Democrats to find a compromise, will affect both domestic discretionary spending and the defense budget. Phillips conceded that he felt the defense cuts were "disproportionately tough," but said it was worth it to achieve that level of spending cuts.

"The president and Senate Democrats all agreed to this during the debt limit deal," he said. "They ought to keep their word."

Meanwhile, a group of nearly 50 leaders of conservative organizations signed onto a letter that called for passage of the cuts?even those that affect the Pentagon, an area of government spending the right rarely likes to touch.

"While many conservatives would prefer reprogramming defense cuts to other areas of discretionary spending (dollar for dollar cuts in the same year), the current sequester savings are better than none at all," the letter, signed by Club for Growth President Chris Chocala, former attorney general Edwin Meese, who served under President Ronald Reagan, and others, read.

At least for now, all signs suggest these groups will get their wish. The Senate this week is poised to vote on a Democrat-sponsored deficit-reduction package that mixes spending cuts with tax increases, but Republicans in the House and Senate have refused to approve any measure that increases taxes. Lawmakers have until Friday to secure a deal.

LG Optimus G Pro: hands-on with the new Snapdragon 600 processor and 5.5-inch 1080p display (video)

LG Optimus G Pro handson with the new Snapdragon 600 processor and 5inch 1080p display video

The Pro version of last year's Optimus G comes in two flavors: Japan gets a 5-inch 1080p phone, while Korea (and the US) is treated to a 5.5-inch phone at the same resolution, but with Qualcomm's latest mobile chip, the Snapdragon 600. We're getting to grips with the Korean flavor here at MWC and while we're still waiting on a launch dates more specific than Q2, we couldn't help taking this particular G Pro for a spin.

While the original wasn't particularly lacking in the battery department, that increase in resolution has been fortunately accompanied by a bigger battery, up from 2,100mAh to 3,140mAh in the Korean edition and 3,000mAh in the Japanese. Design-wise, the lines are softer, more curved and -- if we're honest -- more like the Galaxy S III. There's now a curved physical home button lodged beneath the screen, with capacitive back and menu buttons either side of it that light up with the faintest glow. The back of the phone now gently curves into the rest of the phone, with that eye-catching "crystal reflection" effect now subtly shading into the sides. It retains the same surprisingly light build quality of its predecessor however, that makes us feel like a short fall could render this device a useless pule of glass shards and plastic pieces.

We've been aching to try out another phone with a next generation Snapdragon processor, and the 1.7GHz quad-core beast didn't disappoint in our brief time with the device. Navigation and basic tasks were buttery smooth, even with LG's slightly gaudy 3D animations and Emotion UI. The 400ppi display is, not surprisingly, simply stunning. While it doesn't have the deep saturation and abyssal blacks of some panels out there, it's amazingly crisp and viewing angles are quite impressive. While we're reserving full judgement for a review, we are impressed with how LG's decided to move forward with one of its most well-received smartphones in recent memory.

Abbott's nine wickets help South Africa to sweep

PRETORIA | Sun Feb 24, 2013 5:19pm GMT

PRETORIA (Reuters) - Debutant Kyle Abbott took nine wickets as South Africa completed a 3-0 series sweep over Pakistan with a crushing innings and 18 run victory in the third and final cricket test at Centurion on Sunday.

Pakistan were bowled out for 235 in their second innings, having managed 156 in their first in reply to South Africa's 409.

The win, completed in three days, made Graeme Smith the first captain to claim 50 test wins.

"It has been a very special summer at home with some incredible milestones for myself and the team," Smith told reporters. "To be able to achieve something today in winning 50 tests with a special group of cricketers is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life."

Abbott, who had come in for the injured Jacques Kallis, was the pick of the South African seamers on a helpful wicket, recording match figures of nine for 68.

The 25-year-old took the scalps of Imran Farhat (43) and Ehsan Adil (12) to add to his seven wickets from the first innings.

"My knowledge of Kyle was limited going into the test match so it was fantastic to see him bowl as well as he did," Smith said. "He bowled at a good, solid pace, hit the deck hard, got the ball in the right areas. He asked a lot of questions."

Starting the day on 14 for one, Pakistan showed some fighting spirit losing only Younus Khan (11), who played a thick edge off Dale Steyn to Smith at first slip, in the morning session.

The tourists began to implode after lunch. Azhar Ali (27) and Farhat put on 54 for the third wicket before the former ran himself out in calamitous fashion.

BULLET THROW

Farhat worked the ball to fine leg and after running one, Ali turned for a second at the wicketkeeper's end. He was always struggling against the bullet throw of Steyn from the boundary and in the end was well short.

Pakistan lost two more wickets with the score on 107.

Abbott picked up his eighth of the match when Farhat (43) slashed at a wide delivery and was caught by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers.

Captain Misbah-ul-Haq (5) became Rory Kleinveldt's first wicket of the game when he got a thin edge to a ball. Kleinveldt took a second when Asad Shafiq (6) scooped a delivery to Vernon Philander at mid-off.

Saeed Ajmal (31) and Sarfraz Ahmed put on 69 for the seventh wicket, but the former was trapped lbw by Steyn to end the resistance.

Sarfraz (40) followed soon afterwards when he top-edged Steyn to Dean Elgar at third man and Ehsan Adil tried to pull Abbott but only succeeded in ballooning the ball to Kleinveldt at mid-on.

The final pair of Mohammad Irfan (6 not out) and Rahat Ali (22) hung around for another 33 runs before Rahat was lbw to Robin Peterson to end the match.

South Africa won the first test in Johannesburg by 211 runs and completed a four-wicket victory in the second in Cape Town.

"This is the best team I have played in as a South African cricketer, we have all our bases covered," Smith said. "Part of that is the maturity and professionalism with which they approach every match. If you are even 10 percent off in your game it can affect the result, but the guys gave it everything again."

Pakistan captain Misbah said his team lacked consistency.

"Full credit to the South Africans for the way they played in this series, their batting, bowling and fielding was better," Misbah said.

"We had an opportunity to win the second test in Cape Town with two hundreds and 10 wickets for Saeed Ajmal, but a batting collapse hurt us there. It has been the story of our series."

Border Patrol Mechanic Saves Woman And Child From Car Submerged In Canal (PHOTO)

One mechanic has added another tool to his belt.

On Wednesday morning, a U.S. Border Patrol mechanic saved a woman and her 2-year-old daughter after their car became submerged in a canal.

The incident began when the woman, driving near Interstate 8 in El Centro, Calif., lost control of her vehicle and veered into the water. According to the Imperial Valley Press, as the car went under, the woman and her 2-year-old daughter managed to climb onto its roof.

Meanwhile, the unidentified Border Patrol mechanic, who was driving near the canal, saw that the pair was "in need of urgent assistance," Agent Fabian Morales told the paper.

The mechanic stopped his car and helped them from the roof of the car to the canal bank.

This isn't the first rescue to take place in water.

In January, a sheriff's deputy pulled two women from a car sinking into Lake Ray Hubbard in Texas. The rescue was captured on the patrol car's dashboard camera.

Earlier this month, the NYPD rescued a pair of boaters who fell into Jamaica Bay.

'Suits' Season 2 finale recap: The legal battles end, but the 'War' is ...

After a year of catastrophe and intrigue, where is a show like "Suits" to go? The Season 2 finale, "War," has the answer.

And it is a war. Unfortunately, these lawyers may have entered into a war for which there can be no true victor. Everyone fights, and everyone loses something. Friendships, trust, dreams and wagers are all lost over the course of a single episode. The few small victories of "War" may not be worth the price.

However, all of this loss means one thing for us viewers -- this is one incredible season finale for "Suits"!

Ain't no party like a lawyer party!

When most people go to parties, they drink, socialize and have fun. Lawyers do drink at their parties. But the rest of it? Not so much -- they're too busy betting their careers and suing each other for various things.

What does happen at the party?

  • Harvey (Gabriel Macht) wagers against Edward, the Brit who wants to merge firms with Pearson Hardman, on the future of that deal.
  • Jessica (Gina Torres) calls out Harvey on the bet. She really isn't terribly happy with Harvey these days. In fact, one might say that Jessica wants to put Harvey in his subordinate place. If Harvey loses the bet, he's stuck at the firm with no name partnership in his immediate future.
  • Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Rachel (Meghan Markle) flirt briefly before Harvey interrupts.
  • Louis (Rick Hoffman) gets into a battle of words and mud with a British lawyer named Nigel. Nigel is basically Louis with a snotty accent.

The day after

The fallout from this party is worse than any hangover.

Scottie (Abigail Spencer) ambushes Harvey on the road. They're both wounded -- and therefore vicious -- because of this merger. It's kind of like watching a pair of foxes injured during a hunt, a fitting comparison since that's how Edward thinks of Harvey. The Brit pities Harvey so much that he warns of freezing clients' assets in the wagered lawsuit.

Of course, this isn't as much pity as it is a nasty legal tactic that allows Edward to do pretty much whatever he wants. Harvey isn't doing so well here. He should have seen this coming of course -- Edward explains his dastardly move while serving tea. Backstabbing at this law firm is always accompanied by a tea service, isn't it?

Elsewhere in the firm, things aren't much better. Nigel the Brit-Louis dares to sully Donna (Sarah Rafferty) with his "lovely" lips, thereby inciting the ire of actual Louis. A confrontation in the bathroom doesn't help. No matter how much Louis knows about efficiency, Nigel knows more (how exactly do pets and maternal relationships apply anyway?).

And then there are Rachel and Mike. Rachel finally admits to Mike that she didn't get into Harvard -- and she blames Louis. This is totally going to be a mess later. Also, there's a small issue of Rachel wanting to know Mike's "getting into Harvard" story. Since he doesn't have one, this is just awkward.

Later, she wants Mike to sign a letter officially complaining to Harvard about Sheila keeping her out because of the Louis relationship. You know, because Mike is a Harvard grad... He immediately takes the letter to Louis, who fesses up. Not that any of this helps.

What do you give up to get what you want?

War really is the tragedy of this episode. After all, the battles only end when the losses are too great to continue. This war is no exception. Everyone loses something in the quest to end up the victor.

There are, however, a few moments of touching poignancy, even in the midst of battle. The moment between Harvey and Louis, for example, when both men essentially admit their fears and insecurity, is a fascinating look at enemies who will back each other against a common foe -- to the bitter end if necessary.

It's too bad that Louis' help means the subtle dismantling of Harvey's moral code. The two men plan to use privileged information to sabotage the merger. And Harvey knows exactly what he's doing. It's just that he does care more about winning than morals. His enemies (remember Travis Tanner?) may have been right about that.

Too bad it doesn't help, and too bad Jessica is too smart to fall for such ploys. But even Jessica is starting to lose a little bit of herself in all of this. The managing partner doesn't just want to survive -- she wants to win. Jessica wants to raise herself up above anyone, anyone at all, who might hurt her.

If all of this destroys Harvey, then so be it. Jessica needs to beat him down anyway.

All you need is love. And Donna.

Throughout all of this, we have the tragic figure of Scottie roaming the legal halls. She started this merger ball rolling, but everyone else seems to be fighting over it far more than the once-fierce lawyer.

It takes Donna to figure out what's going on, but then it becomes crystal clear. Scottie is in love with Harvey (bad idea!!!) and was as motivated by a desperate need for attention as anything.

Now here's the odd part: Donna may take advantage of this desperation. She tells Scottie to throw away her ambition in order to win Harvey's love. Is this good advice? Or is it sabotage on the part of Donna?

"Suits" doesn't give us that answer, but Scottie does follow Donna's suggestions and turns over files that could kill the merger. And Harvey soon finds out why. Normally, this affection would be enough to scare off Harvey, but there is nothing "normal" about the man at this point. He orders Mike to move forward with the legal filing that will end it all.

Louis out-Louises Nigel

We now briefly return to the other issue involved with the law firms' merger. Louis and Nigel make each other redundant, placing the men at odds. But love of the theater and stories of childhood bullying can bridge any gap.

That gap is, in fact, filled by an explanation for Louis Litt. He was a bullied child. But then, one day, he learned how to be mean. The bullying ended, but friendship was never an option. Louis does seem to take a chance on friendship now though. He and Nigel agree to cover for each other with their efficiency lists. Both men can be safe.

Except Louis is still that bullied boy with limited defenses. He singles out Nigel as redundant while his own position remains secure. At least Louis feels bad enough about this to go tell Rachel the truth about Harvard.

The battles end, but the war simmers on

Harvey and Mike never get to pull off their merger-ending coup. And the reason is Jessica. She wants this merger. She wants it badly enough that she will risk her own career to turn in Mike if he follows through with one key filing.

Mike caves.

We return to that ultimate battlefield -- the firm's bathroom -- when Harvey finds out. Mike knew nothing of Harvey's stakes in this merger and has worried mainly about the way his mentor has given up on all ethics in order to win.

That's when Jessica walks in. Because this isn't about Mike. This is about Harvey and Jessica. We once thought they were friends, maybe even occasional lovers. We thought that they supported each other no matter what.

We were wrong.

With a few cutting words and an expression of frightening power, Jessica makes one thing clear: She is in charge, and Harvey will learn that.

Does he learn? Harvey definitely learns something about Jessica's nature and their relationship, but it's not likely he will ever learn deference (even to Jessica). The man wanders out into the bustling law office looking lost and close to tears. He even goes to Scottie when he sees her leaving.

Not that it matters -- Scottie has been fired for leaking information to Harvey.

The endings that will begin again

It's the end.

Harvey has lost. He has to concede to Edward, but at least Harvey Specter pulls off one last coup in his defeat -- he gets Edward to reinstate Scottie as a partner.

But will she work in London or New York?

Meanwhile, Mike has banished himself to the file room, hoping to hide from the loss of everyone and everything. It doesn't work. Rachel finds him and demands an explanation for his behavior about her Harvard letter.

At first there are lies. But then Mike concedes the battle he never wanted to fight in the first place: He tells Rachel he never went to Harvard.

She slaps him. Twice. But she can't leave, not when both Mike and Rachel are beyond desperation. Instead, there is a kiss. The kiss is followed by violent passion as desire and anger turn into sex that nearly destroys the file room -- just another casualty of this war.

As the smoke clears from this TV battlefield, most of the soldiers remain standing. All have lost something. We won't know for awhile if any of them have gained anything. For now, we have only a list of casualties and a long wait until the battles resume in "Suits" Season 3.

Fighting Racism In Israel

Adam Ognall, CEO New Israel Fund - Thursday 21st 2013f February 2013

Adam Ognall, CEO of the New Israel Fund, looks at the problem of racism in Israeli football and the work of anti-racism bodies in the country in trying to deal with it

Israeli football hit the headlines due to a group of Beitar Jerusalem fans' reaction to the signing of two Muslim players. Fans unfurled a banner "Beitar pure forever," and sang anti-Muslim chants. I was in Israel that week and watched some Beitar fans booing their own team at the next away game. The Beitar offices were also torched.

Of course the strong and positive response to these events has not received the same attention. This is the real story. Israel has taken great strides to stamp out racism around football. Something that other European footballing nations could take heed from.

The Israeli FA disciplinary committee closed Beitar's east stand for five games and fined the club 10,000. The club banned 50 known troublemakers.

This did not immediately stop the trouble and when one player, Kadiev, made his debut some fans booed. This was drowned out by the applause of a far larger group.

The actions of this hardcore caused a national wave of revulsion. President Peres denounced the fans, Knesset Speaker Rubi Rivlin (Beitar fan) asked how Israelis would feel if a German or English club refused to have Jewish players, and former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (Beitar fan) threatened to no longer attend matches.

Kadiev's debut came when Beitar played Bnei Sakhnin, the Arab-owned team. A rally held outside the ground by Kick Racism out of Israeli Football (KRO Israel) heard from Beitar legend Itzik Zohar. He said: "What has been happening here disgusts me. Football is for everyone and we cannot allow a small minority of racist fans to run the club."

KRO Israel celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It was founded by the New Israel Fund. Its backbone is its Volunteers Forum who monitor matches and produce a weekly racism index of club's fans' behaviour. Over the years we have seen a marked reduction in racist incidents, with Beitar being by far the club with the greatest problems. KRO Israel now works closely with its FA and many clubs and it is a model that the English FA and UEFA both support and take lessons from.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Kevin Harvick sat out both Daytona 500 practice sessions on Friday and he wasn't alone.

Joining Harvick on the sidelines were 11 other drivers, including Richard Childress Racing teammates Austin Dillon and Paul Menard. Dillon is scheduled to make his Daytona 500 debut. Other notables who sat out Friday were Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Juan Pablo Montoya and Mark Martin.

Harvick goes into Sunday's season-opening race with two wins in two races at Speedweeks. His No. 29 Chevrolet sat covered in its garage stall most of the day.

Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart posted the fastest lap of the day in the second practice when he ran around Daytona International Speedway at 197.131 mph. He was followed on the speed chart by four-time champion Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick. Kasey Kahne's 10 consecutive lap average of 195.305 mph was tops for the day, and he was followed by Patrick, who went 195.258.

"Practice today, it was the most racing we've done," she said. "I ran 32 laps straight. We are feeling much more comfortable with the balance going into Sunday."

Patrick is the first woman in history to win the top starting position in NASCAR's top Sprint Cup Series. Crew chief Tony Gibson said Patrick has chosen to start the race from the outside lane, which will allow her to run early in the high line that has worked so well for drivers this week.

Patrick started on the inside in Thursday's qualifying race, and said she learned quickly the Stewart-Haas Racing crew had made the wrong call. Part of Thursday's decision was to line Patrick up in front of Stewart, her teammate and co-car owner.

"Our plan was to stay with Stewart right behind us, and we were hoping to pull away, both of us, at least right at the start," Gibson said. "We're going to cut her loose on Sunday. We told her to treat it like a video game."

Among those who did go out Friday was Carl Edwards, who ran single car laps only. Edwards was involved in wrecks that have damaged three cars during Speedweeks, and a fourth was crashed during testing at Daytona in January.

"Someone texted me that Bobby Allison wrecked three cars and then won," said Edwards, "I haven't wrecked a rental car yet, so we should be good."

Crew chief Jimmy Fennig brought the Roush-Fenway Racing crew in early Friday to begin work on the 500 car, and a backup car was shipped in overnight from Charlotte, N.C.

"We already got it at 6 o'clock this morning and they already put it in the truck," Fennig said. "While you guys were sleeping, we were working."

Native Instruments announces Traktor DJ for iPad, brings the mix to iOS

DJ apps for iPad? There's a bunch. But -- if you're at all familiar with the craft -- there's a very notable name absent from the crowd. Until today that is. Native Instruments set the high watermark for DJ software with its desktop-based Traktor application, and now it's available in compact iOS form. Designed by the same team as the full-fat version, aspiring DJs can enjoy two waveform-based decks, with three-band EQ, eight effects (ported over from Trakor Pro) all redesigned from the ground up for the iPad's touch-based input. The interface eschews the conventional virtualization of a turntable set-up, instead creating a workflow more congruent with the hardware's form factor. Notably, a new "Freeze" mode stops the waveform from galloping on, letting you tend to cue points, loops etc or slice it into samples for "playable" parts. There's also interaction between the mobile and desktop versions via dropbox-based media sync, so any tracks loops and so on made on the move can be seamlessly transported to your club performance too. Think an iPad app is nice and all, but want a little more spice? Well, hook it up to one of the firm's popular Audio 6 or Audio 10 interfaces (via the USB connection kit) you just got proper pre-listen and cue functionality too. Traktor DJ is available today for $19.99, and if you're still undecided, there's a demo video after the break that might just swing it for you.

Dell Latitude 10

The Dell Latitude 10 ($1,146.98 direct bundle, $749 alone) tablet has a laser-tight focus on the corporate business. While other manufacturers are trying to follow where the Windows tablet space is going, Dell is trying to lead the Windows tablet space down a path it knows well: serving the corporate user. The Latitude 10 has several IT and corporate-friendly features that differentiate it from the other systems in the tablet space. All-day battery life, corporate Windows compatibility, and extreme portability are the traits that make it our new Editors' Choice for business tablets.

Design and Features
The Latitude 10 is a very compact tablet, with a 10.1-inch IPS (In-Plane Switching) capacitive touch screen. The frame is made of magnesium alloy, but the exterior is covered in a soft-touch material. The front of the tablet is a seamless piece of Gorilla Glass. The Latitude 10 measures about 11 by 7 by 0.41 inches (HWD) and weighs under a pound and a half with the standard battery, making it very portable. The bottom of the system has a micro-USB port which can be used to charge the unit if you don't have the supplied charger that plugs into the docking port. This makes it very handy if you forget your Dell charger at work but still have the micro-USB charger for your phone.

Around the other three sides, you'll find a full-size USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, volume control, power button, mini-HDMI port, and a Kensington lock port. Unfortunately, the USB port isn't the speedier USB 3.0, but it will fully power external hard drives, something that can't be said about one of Dell's rivals, the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 ($729 list).

The IPS screen has a 450-nit rating and a 1,366 by 768 resolution. This makes it bright, but the resolution is lower than true 1080p HD. This means that the screen natively displays less pixels than the Editors' Choice for Windows 8 Slate tablets, the Microsoft Surface Pro ($999 list), which has a 1080p screen. That said, at this size, 1,366 by 768 is perfectly adequate for viewing Word, PowerPoint, and other work documents.

You can drive a 1080p external monitor using the Latitude 10's mini-HDMI port or via the system's productivity dock. The $100 productivity dock comes with four more USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, audio, Ethernet, and power connector. The Latitude 10 supports dual monitors, whether you connect directly or use the HDMI port in the dock. Like most Windows 8 setups, spanning and mirroring dual displays are supported. The front mounted webcam is 720p HD/2MP, and the rear camera with flash is 8MP.

The Latitude 10's screen supports 10-finger touch gestures, plus you can add a $34 Wacom stylus to your purchase. The Wacom stylus supports pressure sensitivity, right click, and erase. This is similar to the Microsoft Surface Pro's stylus, and is actually better than the Lenovo Tablet 2's stylus, which lacks the eraser function. When you bring the stylus tip near the screen, it activates the Wacom digitizer and disables the touch screen. This way it won't register your hand or palm when you try to draw on the Latitude 10's screen. It would have been nice to have a way to clip the stylus to the Latitude 10 directly, but you can use a case or your pocket to store the stylus when it's not in use.

Our review unit also came with a $50 Dell KM632 wireless keyboard and mouse combo, extra $50 power adapter, $40 case, and a $55 60Whr extended battery from Dell, bringing the bundle total to $1,146.98. The external keyboard and mouse help the Latitude 10 act more like a desktop when plugged into its docking station, and we'd recommend the dock if you work from a desk for significant periods of time. Keeping an extra power adapter in your travel bag will help keep your tablet charged, as will the extended battery. This highlights one of the Latitude 10's biggest differentiators among its rivals: It uses replaceable batteries, bucking the sealed battery trend popularized by the Apple iPad and continuing through the HP Envy X2 and Acer Iconia W510-1422. As seen below, the extended battery can give you more power without the added bulk of a keyboard dock.

The Latitude 10 has three storage options: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB of flash storage. You can, of course, supplement this with a SD card, but you will need to choose wisely when initially equipping your tablet. When we took the Latitude 10 out of the box, Windows reported that it had 36.8 out of 52.2 GB free. This is certainly enough for a few corporate apps with some room left over for document storage, but you should consider getting the 128GB model if you need to carry lots of video files along in your journeys. The 32GB units should be limited to those who are constantly connected and using Internet cloud storage or corporate servers for storage. You can get to those servers via 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi or using the HSPA+/3G WWAN radio in our review unit. As an option, 4G LTE will be available after this month, but the 4G LTE and Wi-Fi-only models will not have the GPS circuitry found in our review unit.

As befits a corporate-oriented system, the Latitiude 10 didn't come with any pre-loaded apps aside from Skype and a tile from Dell showing users how to get started with Windows 8. This helped with the Latitude 10's free space, which was much better than the 28GB left free on the Acer Iconia Tab W510. Other IT-friendly features include TPM for network and file security. Dell offers an even more secure version of the Latitude 10 with a fingerprint and smartcard reader built in. The Latitude 10 comes with a one-year standard warranty, which can be extended to three years with options including pro-level 24/7 support.

Performance
Dell Latitude 10 You wouldn't expect barn-burning multimedia benchmark results from a system with 2GB of memory and an Intel Atom Z2760 processor, but on the flip side the Atom processor is very frugal with battery consumption. The Latitude 10 scored relatively high on CineBench R11.5 (0.55 points), matching the HP Envy X2. It also got one of the better Atom-based scores on our Handbrake video encoding test (6:27). Its 1,291 point score on PCMark 7 was middling, far behind the Microsoft Surface Pro (4,768 points) and its ultrabook-class competitors. Basically, if you need a fast system, go with one of the ultrabook-class slates like the Surface Pro or Acer Iconia W700.

If you need Windows program and Windows corporate network compatibility with all-day computing, then the Latitude 10 is right up your alley. The Latitude 10 lasted 9 hours, 20 minutes on our battery rundown test using the standard slim 30WHr battery; it lasted a phenomenal 19:38 using the extended 60WHr battery. The HP Envy X2 fell far behind with and without its battery-clad keyboard dock (7:08/12:34), and the Acer Icona W510 was a bit better alone (10:27), but was short with its keyboard battery dock (17:50). All of these Atom-powered systems lasted many hours longer than ultrabook-class tablets like the Microsoft Surface Pro (4:58) and Sony VAIO Duo 11 (3:09). The only drawbacks to the extended battery are that the battery sticks out of the back of the Latitude 10 by a few mm, and add a bit of weight (1.87 pounds). That said, the Latitude 10 is still much more portable than the three-pound HP X2 and Acer W510 when you clip on their keyboard docks.

If battery power, maximum portability, legacy program compatibility, and IT mandates are keeping your business from rolling out tablets, then take a long hard look at the Dell Latitude 10. It can fulfill your traveling workers' need to stay on the corporate programs and servers, while giving them extreme mobility. It's more of a stay-in-touch and information-retrieval device than a multimedia workhorse, but if your workers are clamoring for tablets, and Mordac the Preventer is keeping Windows RT, iPads and Android tablets off your corporate network, then the Dell Latitude 10 is the one you want. If you want more power for multimedia and number crunching, then the Editors' Choice for Windows 8 slate tablets Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro is a better performance tablet, but its battery life is half that of the slim Latitude 10. As such, we award the Dell Latitude 10 with our first Editors' Choice for Business Windows 8 Slate Tablets for its IT-friendly features and true all-day battery life.
